Following a full megaflush on my SC at 75k, the gearbox is noticeably smoother 1,000 miles in so I would personally recommend. 4.2 Supercharged Vogue SE

The official recommendation from ZF, was a FLUSH (Not an oil change) at 75k miles

This has now been revised to a flush, at anything between 50k-75k miles


As has been stated, a drain and refill replaces 4 litres of oil.
A "Double Flush" replaces 4 litres, which then dilutes with the old oil still in the box. You will be lucky if this method replaces 50% of the old oil.

A Flush is the only way to replace all of the oil in the gearbox and torque convertor, with minimal contamination


I actually flushed an FFRR a few weeks back, 07MY with 55k miles. This is the oil that came out...

The sealed for life is not really sealed for life and the official recommendation is 100k miles. The transmission filter and pan are a single unit and the drain plug simply comes out when you turn it, like normal. Then remove the pan/filter unit, replace and refill. Now that is very straightforward (done it a few times on the MY 2006 SC when the cooler ruptured, mixing ATF with coolant).

However there is a lot of ATF that stays "in the system" when you do that. So I used cheap ATF to flush the coolant mix out and that was about 5 dump and fill runs before it was very clear ATF and not "milkshake".

Now doing that with the Lifeguard 6 is a bit expensive. However when you do a filter and dump, you need about 7 liter of Lifeguard (and that is a standard set you can buy from Duckworth and the likes). So that means that some 60% of the ATF is replaced by new, plus a brand new filter. Then the question is, do you need to do another dump and fill after that.

I wouldn't unless the old ATF is really really dirty.

As for the megaflush, if that means that most of the ATF is changed out and the filter is new, that would be even better. I may do that before I ship the 5.0 to Malaysia !!!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

So new sump with filter needed (anyone got MPN) and i guess its std fill procedure? (work it through the gears engine running??)

do it the number of times you feel are required to change majority of fluid or Flush as you see fit.

where is the filler, front of the sump?

I filled the gearbox with the garden spray bottle first (the type that you pump up) until it starts running from the hole. Then start the engine after closing the plug and run it for a few minutes through the gears. Then open the plug hole and fill till it comes out with running engine. Of course all the safety things in place (in park plus parking brake plus blocks on the wheels).

The garden spray bottles are cheap and work like a charm, even the one I bought in Nigeria did great and I used it several times for the ATF changes I had to do. You will probably find them in any garden materials store. I had a 10 liter unit I seem to remember but don't pin me down on that. I would fill it with 5 liter at a time.

that link is with the built in filter, has anyone tried the separate filter/sump items?

if any one decides to have a Megaflush or similar done..
please make sure that they are using the correct OEM oil instead of a 'suitable' substitute..
having done a Megaflush to my previous FF ….i would now instead change filter and do partial flush. replacing oil a couple of times.
over the past 15 years there has always been a 'classic' Mercedes from the 1990-1999 in the garage.
there are hundred of threads on the many Mercedes forums discussing flushes both full and partial.
partial seem to be the chosen path for Merc's ( possibly all auto boxes) as the gearbox specilist have found that the fresh oil over a period of time loosens up the fine film of worn parts that get deposited on the wall etc over many years.
Auto boxes work to micro tolerances and it does not take a lot to block up a valve body etc.
a partial flush and filter change tries to avoid this issue by accepting the fact that the film is dislodged but over a more gradual time period and this content is reduced with each partial flush..
thats the idea(urban myth) any way..
sorry to add to the contention…
