Can you read the transmission model number stamped into the casting :

and the Land Rover part number off the sticker (I assume yours is a TGD 500480):

So has the B-clutch drum ‘opened out’ ? (its outside diameter should be 200mm). In case you contact a supplier regarding the B-clutch drum I believe that ZF actually call it the ‘sun gear shaft’ (part no. 1068 272 030)

Okay. The TGD500481 was only fitted to 4.4s with a VIN between 6A206378 and 6A236915. I can’t make it out from the photo but can you confirm that the ZF model number is 1068 020 064 ?

Phil Do you think that the casing will be alright or would that need replacing ?
Thanks for your time Steve

I have a Jaguar casing (which is of no use to you) and a Range Rover 4.2 S/C casing in my garage at the moment for the 6HP26. Maybe all the Land Rover petrol-engined 6HP26X casings are identical (they all mate with the same transfer box) and, knowing ZF, the part number differences may well just be because the transmission uses a different torque converter or calibration in the Mechatronic unit and otherwise the hardware is identical but, nevertheless, there’s a risk that they aren’t exactly the same (RFOB bolt pattern?) so I would suggest re-using your existing casing if you possibly can. How deep is the gouging into the casing (compared with the wall thickness)?

I’m sure all the ‘sun gear shafts’ will be the same between different models so if you have difficulty sourcing a new one (or they’re asking stupid money) I have a couple of used ones in my garage at the moment (and clutch plates too). Let me know if I can help out.

Second-hand Land Rover 6HP26s are much more plentiful than 5HP24s, for example, so they achieve much lower prices on eBay, in case you were maybe thinking of buying a complete replacement.

Phil

Hi phil
I'd say the gouging is no more than a couple of mm
If you have a used sun gear shaft and clutch plates that would be a massive help
As budget is very limited at moment my plan is to fix it up for now then replace
When a suitable low mileage one is available rather than getting one because I
Need one. Is collection possible if so I could bring the casing to compere
With the one you have thanks Steve

If you can make it to Leyland in Lancashire on a weekday during working hours then you're welcome to collect.

You can have the sun gear shaft and clutch plates for £30 and then another £30 for the casing if you decide it’s identical. What state are the steel plates in from your B-clutch?

So were these the only components that appeared to have any damage? I suppose there’s a danger that some of the swarf may have found its way through the torque converter, valve block or got lodged in the oil cooler – though it would have had to get through the filter first. Are you going to buy the overhaul kit for your rebuild?

Phil

That sounds perfect my next few questions was going to be do they do an overhaul kit for it , if you have a set of steel plates with the friction plates I'll have those as well as they have been hot but don't look too out of shape
As for the torque converter was going to send off for testing is there a way of stripping the valve block for cleaning ? Thanks steve
As for damage this does appear to be the only area affected other plates do all look fine although I'm still to seperate a and e clutch
The filter and oil was done by land rover dec 2012 so I'm hoping that caught most of the debris

Hi phil
Stripped down the a and e clutch assembly
Found the cause of the heat in the b clutch was due to e clutch giving up the ghost
Do you happen to have a spare one of these too?
