Right thanks for the input. battery is charging again. I will let it go through the complete cycle. Might take a while because the car is outside in west wales and I can't leave it overnight.

I've not up dated my non BT iid tool but what are the two differences in the versions , 2.17 and 3 ?

Just plugged my 'new one' in and it says the battery has 12.2 Volts when everything is 'off'. I believe that's a healthy 12.2
