Which ceramic paste or copper grease?

Hi,

I've read on the forum that some people prefer copper grease, others prefer a different product for their brake pads, such as ceramic compound but aside to copper grease, I've yet to see any named brand products.

Our recently fitted front Brembo pads are going to be removed to be cleaned and re-coated to try and eradicate a very annoying squeal (the fitting mechanic didn't use the AF supplied copper grease but used his own normal grease, so don't yet know if that's the reason for squeal).

I wondered what peoples best recommended product is please (car has front Brembo calipers, discs and pads)?

I always use coppaslip, the branded one. But I will say that just about all brake squeals I've ever come across were due to pads being replaced without cleaning all the old congealed brake dust off the calipers and carrier brackets. i.e. remove old pads and shove new ones in. Job done. (half done actually)

10 minutes per corner with an assortment of scrapers and wire brushes pays dividends all round. Thumbs Up

Never having done anything like that before, what's the best procedure/ product for cleaning off the calipers and carriers please?

Also, when you say branded copper grease, do you mean for example one of these two products?

If it's a relatively straightforward task, I'm contemplating doing it myself so as to learn. If not and/ or if that doesn't cure the squeal, then I'll take if back.

The problem i can see is once you have tried getting rid of the squeal, you will probably be blamed by the garage you have used for (interfering/creating) the squeal... If you have paid this garage to fit your brakes, simply take it back to them and ask them to take a look?

i think it was a friend that fitted them craig..ryan?

it could be the paste that was supplied by AF that is the problem...my son said he didnt think much of the product and used 'proper' [as he calls it] bmw stuff.. ... - .- -.

Yes. Stan/ Craig, it was a family friend mechanic who fitted the brakes.

For clarity, whatever is causing the front squeal it is nothing to do with the copper grease supplied in the Advanced Factors brake kit because on the front brakes, said friend used grease that his garage uses.

He'll take the car back in and look at it no problems, but I'd just like to learn how to do straightforward tasks (if it is) as I go along, time permitting. If my DIY efforts don't change anything, then our friend can have another look.

Definitely a DIY task these days. And one I will only do myself or use a 100% trusted garage for TBH.

I've actually had a situation where my Ford Granada from years ago had a pad fall out whilst I was reversing into a parking space. The main dealer mechanic had forgotten to refit the retaining pins apparently. I kid you not. Since then I've never really trusted anyone with my brakes except me, or our local garage who knows how paranoid/OCD I am about brakes. He leaves the wheels off for me to inspect usually Laughing

Most garages are fine, I just managed to find one who wasn't. It was a long time ago and they went out of business (surprisingly) after a couple of fairly high profile cases of them charging for stuff not actually done. Trading standards and court cases etc.

But, knowing how to do it yourself means you can, or you can at least do meaningful checks on garage work. You might like to know the below image is of a pad which was reported to me as being “Red – Dangerously Low, 2mm” by a main dealer. This was emailed to their DP and head office with a fairly strongly worded bunch of text and has now been “Dealt with”. But that spanner man will end up in another garage someplace so the world isn't actually rid of him, just the place where he used to work.

I got something quite different from my Audi indie when buying some replacement (Audi) pads from them, more like a non setting glue type stuff - "something lube" - can't remember right now but will report later today (after England lose to Costa Rica)

Thanks Joe, the plastilube seems rated on German marques for sure and seems to come In red/ white and also blue/white tube Thumbs Up

I've also read a fair few online votes for using Mercedes Benz brake paste on Range Rover brake pads which many say is excellent for anti squeal.

It's about £1.99 for enough to do 1 or 2 'wheels' subject to your preference to use one packet per wheel or spread it a little thinner and use one packet for 2 wheels Mr. Green

Has anyone used it?
