2002 TD6 HSE, 110k miles, full dealer history, not missed a beat in the 12 months owned, not driven hard (couldnt if you tried )

Pulled out of petrol station this morning on way to work and lost all drive. Managed to roll the car to a parking spot and cut out engine straight away. Left for a couple of minutes, started it up fine but when I select any gear, its make some pretty bad noises (clunking, whining) and will not drive at all. Nothing displayed in message centre

Spent this morning researching and found it may be one of a few different things (box, diff, torque convertor etc)

Any thoughts, ideas, experiences shared will be appreciated

Has it had the prop shaft recall / enhancement (according to our local service manager).

100% Diff/shaft mate......should be covered under LR recalls.  If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

it has definitely had the diff done as I checked the history out with the main dealer before buying

If its been done once before, whats the score if it goes again?

However only relatively recently (18 ish months) did they develop a replacement that worked. If this is the case Land Rover should repair FOC.

Yes as above.....mine on my old TD6 was replaced then about 18 months ago had a recall for a "newer" fix FOC.

Get on the blower and Im sure it will be covered mate  If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

Oh yes and when they did the recall they refunded all the money I had paid the first time it was replaced so I was very happy about that too  If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

If Land Rover play silly and do not do the work under warranty, speak to Ashcroft transmissions. They do a repair kit, i think, that is a fraction of the price of a new diff.

both have the same symptoms, ie no drive.

Have you had a smell of burning oil?

If the diff goes you lose drive 100%

With the gearbox it can take a couple of miles to go.... and depending on how badly cooked it is may still have very limited drive, after it has cooked down.

No, didnt smell a things just plainly lost the drive. My non-mechanical brain was telling me something was spinning and trying to engage but couldnt

OK ,, if you get under and take a looksey , if you have a UJ at front and rear of the front prop then it has the new prop modification. I doubt this is the case from what you say so far so its likely you only have a UJ at the end where the prop links to the gearbox.

To see if it is the front diff you have a number of options, try jacking one front wheel and turning it 360 degrees around-- if it does the diff is shot.. or at least the diff input pinion is shredded. The differentials are actually fine but the pinion is a bitch to replace as it needs diff removal , dissasembley and the new pinion on reassebly is tensioned by a collapseable spacer. the tension set by the torque required to get rotation on the shaft from static... hence they replace the whole diff.

The other way to see if it has gone which may require an assistant... open the hood, start the car and have the assistant put the car in drive.. you now stand on the right side of the car as you look at it from the front. Standing beside the wing look down to the backl of the engine bay and you should be able to see the front prop. If it is the input pinion that has failed the front prop will most likely be rotating with the clunking and chewing is actually the teeth on the pinon grating against the prop. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not do this with your head under the car.. it may just grab.. hence the assistant to sit in ready to press the brake / shut down the car

Interestingly the prop shaft replacement / modification also requires removal of the input pinon flange and replacement with a different flange that mates to the new prop with UJ. Quite how Landrover to this in situ and get the tension right is a total mystery to me as they can't test the force required to roate the shaft when the input pinion is up against the rest of the diff. The collaspsable spacer is a one shot item... again this is not replaced to my knowledge when they do the prop modification. Landrover may have a cunning way to do all this but I strongly suspect they just winged it. On the bright side I've yet to hear of a modified prop letting go.


I only know all this as I had to rebuild the front diff on my 101 and it was a real learning curve I'll tell you .. all the principles of setting the input pinion correctly are the same on the BMW / Range Rover unit.

The bonus is that if it is this Landrover should replace the diff and also fit the new prop modification at the same time.. Make sure you prompt them for the modified prop mind!
