Fault codes / ENgine power

Hi,

having gotten to the bottom of a fair few issues on my Dec '13 acquired FF L322 (04 v8 with LPG) I now can't work out the following:

1.Random 'thick' wire going from ODB2 across the bulkhead to the other side. The side panel on the driver's side needs to be popped off to see it (although not seen it myself as haven't had a chance). Is this related to my LPG install or something else? It interferes with any kind of diagnostics software - as soon as this wire is removed the ODB2 port works!

    2. Car seems to spring to life at about 50mph - is this the way they all work or do I have some kind of issue??

Thanks for your help again guys - hopefully sometime I can return the favour!!!

sounds like a bodge fix (emulator) to stop you getting CEL when running on lpg

I could be well wrong but thats my best guess

Thanks dingg1....

I guess I should trace it back to source. If it is a bodge should it go to something else or the LPG ECU?

I'd guess it would go to the emulator itself

Thanks again

Is such a 'bodge' normal? When I turn the ignition on I've noticed the CEL doesn't come up along with the other lights before turning off.

Is that normal for an l322?

Might need a trip to an LPG specialist or I may disconnect the wire and take it for a drive!

Cheers

its not normal , if the lpg is set up properly and mapped well it shouldn't need an emulator fitting , its usually fitted by installers whoa re struggling a bit with mapping or the lpg system fitted isn't up to the task.

the EML (cel) light should certainly light up when you start up the car

Thanks for the pointer.

Looks like another trip to the indy :-/

Will take it for a drive tomorrow but I guess with no working CEL it might be pointless

Well I've cut the unidentified wire and have managed to get some successful connections with my simple ELM bluetooth interface Smile

Not seeing any different in running (petrol or LPG) with this wire cut.

I do think my CEL is either blown or something has been done to it as it doesn't even come on when you turn on the ignition as you'd expect.

Off down to Jamesons tomorrow to see if they can get my CEL working - also read out the following faults this morning (had already cleared them out a day or two ago so these are obviously problems that need sorting) ....

P0011 Powertrain - "A" camshaft position - timing over-advanced or system performance (bank 1)
P0174 Powertrain - System too lean (bank 2)
P0171 Powertrain - System too lean (bank 1)

Any ideas on what these could relate to? I'm hoping them are something to do with me feeling a sudden urge of power 50mph + in the car?

Had a quick search and there's talk of hoses cracking etc.

Would be good to get some pointers so I can give the indy a bit of a headsup (not that I should have to!!)

Thanks again all Smile

the lean codes will be what the emulator was masking , now that you've chopped it out (brave without knowing what it was ) you can see them with your reader , are they pending codes or confirmed ? if confirmed they should be lighting up the warning lamp.

you need to take it to an lpg installer to get it sorted IMO , either your system isn't up to the task or it needs mapping properly. have a look at lpgforum.co.uk to find a professional nearby you.

is your car a bmw engine or jag?

the bmw is apparently easier to convert with lpg than the jag engined variants and the s/c is the most troublesome

I thought I'd take the punt and chop it - I've got a pair of pliers in the car just in case I have to connect it up again whilst on the road!

When I first checked they were 'confirmed' but this morning were 'pending'.

It's a BMW engine so the easier of the range to convert - will venture down to the forum recommended and get them to check Smile

I suppose I can determine if it's petrol or lpg related by running it on petrol only, going for a drive and seeing if they reappear.

thanks again mate!

If they're pending they'll light up the CEL (IF ITS WORKING) after 3 or 4 running cycles of the engine

re your other post tuning the system , it shouldn't be too bad with the bmw engine tbh.

you'll need the correct lead for your lpg ecu and the software is generally available free to download.

If your going to take it to an lpg installer just let them sort it

Just wants a retune...........the reason it probably goes well at 50mph + when accelerating is that the fuel system goes into open loop and does not require the 02 sensors. below that ant the system needs an lpg map and both working sensors. IF the sencors are ok(check the short term fuel trim on your ELM) then the map wants modifying. Which gas system have you got? 5.0 supercharged autobiography
Gone-4.4 Vogue Lpg now unmapped
4.6 HSET Turbo Lpg mapped
Gone-Defender 90 200tdi
Gone - 3.9 Sprintex supercharged LPG
Gone - 3.9 Vogue LPG

Thanks for the response mate.

My gas system is an EMR one and not very common I think.

The car comes alive 50mph + on petrol too from memory so it can't just be LPG map? I've used torque app but can't see the fuel trim value. Think I need a different app maybe

Hi,

got some trim figures and they were fluctuating from +19 to -20 so I think somethings up here.

I was told by the indy that the LPG could've Censored up the o2 sensors so I now need to determine for sure if they are screwed and what do do next.

Any pointers from anybody on here?

I'm armed with the Torque app which gives me the o2 sensor voltages for sensors 1 and 2 on both banks if that helps!

Cheers

Try reflashing the Engine management ECU with the latest software first. My 4.2 SC (non LPG) had the CEL/EML coming on all the time due to "too critical" parameters in the original factory program.

It is actually better to get all the ECUs reflashed with their latest software.

Then after that, find a good LPG installer that has done FFRRs and EMR systems before and you stand a chance of getting it right.

Let them read the O2 sensors as well when they are doing the reflashes and see if they are really out of bounds or it is just the software being old. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!
