^ what he means is someone in the car with their foot on the brake and hand brake on with the engine idling, the car in Drive and you lying underneath the car undoing the fill/level plug on the gearbox.

When in Neutral or Park ,there will be more oil in the box as various clutches, pumps etc will not be using it. Therefore, if you check the level when in this state, there will not be enough fluid once you start operating the box.

Jeepers guys, please don’t recommend something potentially dangerous like working underneath a vehicle with the engine running and Drive selected! The engine must be running to ensure that the torque converter is full together with the cooler and its pipework. Also the valve block needs to be full (they contain a surprising amount of fluid - you can see all the worm-tracks in the photo below).

As above and also put back in exactly the measured quantity that came out when I replaced the sump with integrated filter. I was also surprised that several bolts were corroded, but managed to get them out without them sheering . |

Sorry to go slightly off the beaten path here but if you were flushing the box using the 3 oil change system. At which change would you do the filter? Is there any other way to flush out all the old fluid? |
