To TDV8 or not to TDV8?

Just had a look at this rather nice TDV8 at a local-ish garage :-

http://www.stevesargentcars.co.uk/used-car...state-2734

I really like the colour combo. Does this seem a reasonable price?

Only issue I have is switching from 4.2 S/C and that amazing engine....has anyone else out there gone from petrol to diesel? Will I regret it? Or should I just say Censored it and go for a 5.0 S/C?! SDV8 AB MY 2019

How many miles do you do per annum?

What sort of trips do you do? (short / stop / start / long distance)? 2006 4.2 SC

Do around 5k per annum, mainly short trips to the station and back when I'm not working from home (around 7 miles each way) and an occasional trip to the folks in Folkestone (100 mile round trip). SDV8 AB MY 2019

Test drive it and form you own conclusion.

I went from a 3.9 classic to a tdv8 and am quite happy with it.

Then again I 'm not a boy racer.

Petrol all the way............

Diesel's are designed to be used for long trips and to get hot, they hate the short trips.

We have a diesel in the family (not LR) and I have just spent a fortune having EGR and DPF repairs because it does the school run, supermarket etc. etc. It simply isn't used for what it was designed to do.

FFs don't really like short trips at all but the traditional petrol engine is far more forgiving. Plus:

Petrol cars are cheaper to buy (but also carry a lower resale price)
Petrol is cheaper than diesel
Petrol is cheaper to service
The MPG difference at 5k miles pa is really not going to be noticeable
Petrol traditional combustion engine = simple, no complex EGRs, DPFs, munching turbos etc.

I think if you look at "wholelife" costs there is not much in it........Just my 5P - Others will have another view I am sure! Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

I've got a 4.2 SC, I don't drive it very hard / fast at all. I think in terms of speed, the TDV8 is plenty quick enough. I quite like the idea of the TDV8 but I personally just don't do enough miles and long trips plus it's the turbo failures affecting both the FF and RRS which would keep me awake at night. It's all a bit of an unknown still but I guess it will all become clearer as time moves on.

If you're doing 30k+ miles pa, the TDV8 will win every time. Good luck with what you decide!

Also worth a read.............

I went from a 4.2SC to a 4.4TDV8.

The thing that got me about the 4.2 was the range. I was forever filling the thing up. Now, I do it far less often.

I don't notice the diesel unless I'm filling up.

The only downside is that the engine takes longer to spool up - nothing; press harder on the accelerator; nothing; press harder; then OMFG we're off like a stabbed rat.

FBH is nice but I don't get much benefit as I normally forget to use it or the low battery warning shuts it down too early.

I've got both petrol and diesel RR's for the miles you do go for the petrol - if you were doing minimum 12 to 15k miles them I would say go for the 4.4 V8 Diesel it's a fantastic engine with stump pulling torque but probably not worth the extra cost for only 5k miles PA

Cheers for all the advice on this great forum, I really appreciate it being a relative newbie to the land of Full Fats. I will start my search for a 5.0 S/C with the right colour combo. Seen one I like advertised at Saxton 4x4, but they have a dreadful reputation, so probably best avoided SDV8 AB MY 2019
