Ultimate infotainment upgrade

Hiya all

My own 03 L322 has this annoyingly common and much mentioned MID pixel dissapearing problem, and being someone with a fair degree of experience and sucess at even micro surgical level electronic repairs, i got some replacement ribbons from Ebay and had a go at replacing it. What an absolute waste of time and effort that was Crying or Very sad

I then looked at just buying a new replacement MID, but it turns out to be mega expensive, and they don't even offer an exchange option. Evil or Very Mad

That's when i decided on embarking on a new and daring mission to fix this my way Wink
For those not familiar with "my way", perhaps you should check out this thread on how i upgraded my entire Disco 3 infotainment system.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic37092.html?highlight=

I am absolutely going to rip all this earlier BMW based equipment out of my 03 L322 and replace it all with the very latest, full on spec, infotainment gear, including Front Touch screen, Enhanced Sat Nav with TMC, Bluetooth Phone, Voice activation, Rear reversing cam, Remote Blue tooth Venture Cam, 6 CD changer, 6 disc DVD changer with remote control, Rear seat entertainment with Rear head rest mounted screens and wireless head phones, Television, and full Logic 7 Audio including Sub Woofer. All using origional LR spec parts.

I am determined to try and achieve this for less than the cost of a new MID if i can possibly help it. If i can flog off my old bits for enough, it may well come down to finally costing me less.

If anyone is interested, i will document this project from start to finish with photos etc

I have researched this very deeply using GTR, Microcat and my own experience, So I know exactly what it entails, right down to the nuts and bolts.

If i bought all the bits i need new, i would be looking at near 11,000 GBP, however through a lot of dealing, ebay scouring, contacts and good fortune, as well as what i already have in my cupboard, I have already secured almost all the parts i will need, with just a few minor exceptions for about a tenth of that and with buying the rest new, which are on order I am up to only about 2,200 ish.

My new bits should arrive next week, and i will be starting by connecting it all up on the bench and programming it all up to get it to work together.

I will post up again when i reach that stage. 2003 4.4 HSE

Colin, I am most definitely interested in this. You recall we exchanged mails on retro-fitting the factory NAV to my 07 L322 HSE. Well, I'm still struggling to list all the part numbers, specifically loom numbers for it.

See here. http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post24931.html#24931

Anyway, mine is but a walk in the park compared to your pilgrimage so yes, I am most interested to see how you get on Sir. And some part numbers pretty please. Mr. Green

You going for the lot?? Rear screens, venture cams etc? All the Autobiography accoutriments? Seriously ?? Bow down Well, if you're gonna be a bear, might as well be a Grizzly. Yeah !!

BTW, if you need info on the HK Logic-7, mine has this. Can mail pics, part numbers and all other stuff which might help you.

All the best

Footnote to all: To those who don't know, yes, this man is the God who is BBS (Black Box Solutions) and who makes complicated car electronics look easy. If anyone can do this, he is the one. Bow down Bow down

I really do thank you all so very much for your many very kind comments of support and i am humbled by the comments of acknowledgement Embarassed

I am especially pleased to see that there is such a strong and instant degree of deep interest. For my D3 upgrade project i already knew there would be a lot of interest, based on the many who had enquired on the D3 forum if it could be done and flatly told it was impossible. Laughing
But I was not entirely sure this would be the case for this L322 project. And as such, was not sure if it would be worth all the extra time and trouble to photograph and document it all.
Which would have been a shame, as one of the biggest reasons i have for doing this, is to hopefully inspire others to have a go, even if just to a lesser extent, as seemed to the case with the D3 project.

But as i see, There is not just interest, there are even some who already have some upgrade / modification thoughts and as such i will happily lead the way and do my best to Document, detail and photograph the project from start to finish.

daveo, interestingly i do have one arm tied behind my back regarding parts. If i were based in the UK, i would have already visited half a dozen breakers already and secured a lot of the smaller bits i will need. As it is i am having to buy lots of silly things like nuts, bolts and brackets new. This obviously has a cost. Most are affodable enough, And i have been very lucky / busy with Ebay, other forum members ETC over the last fortnight, but i do still have a few items that are just a bit too much new for what they are, but nothing that is a show stopper or i might be able to work around. Things like the AV panel in the rear of the centre console, the overhead console for RSE, TV tuner antennea Amps x 4. I would also love to get my hands on a set of the later Logic 7 speakers, even odd ones would help, but in the meantime will try to use the existing DSP set i have for now at least.
Speaking of which, no pun intended, what's a Ulf module ?

However I really cannot mention parts at all without giving the biggest possible thanks ever to Nick (TLO) at Yeovil Land Rover, who true to his Superman reputation, has really helped me far beyond the call of duty. Bow down Bow down Bow down

All in all, with the ups and downs, i think that my overall parts cost is quite achievable by anyone else.
BTW Dom, are you still looking for a Nav unit, if so i found you one. 140 IIRC the chap wants. 2003 4.4 HSE

I sure am please Colin. Also, I'm STILL trying to get a look at some looms for the part number tag so if you come across those as well during your upgrade process please. There's definitely no plugs & wiring for these in mine so it has to be some kind of overloom.

I'm also guessing there are a few other bits I shall need but I did manage to get hold of this diagram from TOPIX. Not sure if it's the whole story though. Any of these other bits you might know of would also be appreciated. I'm due to ask Nick if he can help with part numbers as well.

1 - Roof pod (global positioning system (GPS) antenna)

2 - Microphone - Voice recognition

3 - Touch Screen Display (TSD)

4 - Integrated Head Unit (IHU)

5 - Instrument cluster

6 - Traffic Message Channel (TMC) tuner

7 - TMC antenna amplifier

8 - Navigation computer

Anyway Sir, best of luck. If you need any help finding parts etc I'm due to visit a few of the well known breakers in the next few weeks.

All the best

Dom

Hiya Scarey, Ah yea, the hawkeye exchange thread. Rolling Eyes
Just some guy from the far East, who bought a Hawkeye and posted a really honest review about it on another forum. I was so impressed by his genuineness and honesty about his ultimate dissapointment, i exchanged his hawkeye for an MSV-2 EXTREME system for him FOC.

Regards your questions about our / my products scarey, please understand that i really like and respect Martin (this forums owner). He has very hard and fast rules about commerial content in posts and for very good reason. After all providing us all with this forum is not without cost.
As such, in all due respect. unless i have commercial posting priviledges here, which i currently don't, i will not be referring to, or commenting on / promoting our equipment here beyond what i really have to. Thumbs Up

If you or anyone needs any Info on our products etc, please E-mail our sales dept on the E-mail address found on the home page of our web site.

Dom, No worries, I got ya covered too then, in both cases Thumbs Up

Those loom prices really are a killer, no doubt you clocked the regular 1300 quid listed option.
Where on earth do these folk make these prices up from. Rolling with laughter
I should be able to sort you out and set you up on a much more realistic path as i do this project. Thumbs Up 2003 4.4 HSE

hi BBS SPY, I support you in what you are doing, the ulf module is the blue tooth unit, i fitted the 13th genaration one to my car, rewired the 54pin plug and you have it all, blue tooth, voice controll on both phone and nav unit, i have the pre touch screen system in my car but i have a few goodys like, full venture cam system and 2010 5 camera system but these use the can bus so my car wont speak to them.. i did read an artical in land rover mag about a couple of landrover tech's driving back from france in there 04 range rover and they talked about the venture cam set up watching the trailer they were towing..
any way heres my offer, if you see any thing on ebay you want and they wont ship to you, have it sent to me and i will send it on...this may help your project and as you said, it makes the project worth while when oter people get inspired by it.

Thanks guys Embarassed

Looks like my project really is going to help quite a few out already and TBH thats definately going to help me motivation wise, and i have a feeling i am going to need all the motivation help i can get Rolling with laughter

Dom, If your existing loom does not have the wiring for Sat Nav, There is actually no overlay or add on loom for this. Do you already know the PN of your existing loom? if so i can validate this, as for some reason i now seem to know them all like the back of my hand Confused

However i hope to be able to come up with something cost effective enough that we can canibalise what you need from and we can then make one up.

Daveo,

Quote:

Of course i can. But you really have no need to Bow Whistle
As you know ,the origional BMW I-bus system is not directly compatible with the Later Can Bus system introduced in 2006 MY (from 1st July 2005 actually) In these CAN models, the Instrument pack also has an I-Bus interface for things like the setas, steering wheel controls, rain sensor, clock and PDC etc. However as you should know, the later Infotainment and Venture cam stuff was introduced at the 05 MY. and i suspect that the article you mention might have referred to an 04 registered vehicle, but built after 1st July 04, thus really making it that all important 05 Spec.

So the big question is, how did they do this in the 05 Year?
The answer is indeed that little known nugget of info you seem to be missing and is also the Key to my entire project. They knocked up a small specialist gateway ECU to go between I-Bus and CAN, Part Number YWC500422 Thumbs Up
Here's the one i just bought for my project.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...K:MEWAX:IT

However, this gateway ECU does much more than translate I-Bus to CAN. It also, like its eventual Ipack replacement, holds the vehicles CCF (Car Configuration File) data and SOM (Security on MOST) data. It's CAN bus port is also connected to the Diagnostic socket, over which it is programmed, the Venture cam dock unit and the IHU (Intergrated Head Uni) which is also the gateway to the MOST Bus and infotainment system. I am not sure the Gateway module can even function without the IHU, but i will hopefully find out for you during bench testing Thumbs Up 2003 4.4 HSE
