Has anyone carried out this procedure and if so how easy was it any pointers.
I'm guessing use of Texaco oil ETL-7045E is essential.

I've heard some horror stories about these gearboxes suppossed to be sealed for life, seems a bit odd to me oil doesn't last forever advice on forums is change it at 80,000 plus or risk problems.
I'm from the if it's not broke camp but that said what would the first indications of a problem likely to be.

Easy job, get the filter, gasket and new bolts from Dan@Duckworths.
Life is a lot easier if you can get the car on a lift to do it.
Drain oil, remove sump and gasket, remove filter by pulling off downwards. Check no retaining rings left in oil pump inlet tube.
Push on new filter and refit gasket and sump.
Check for aluminium particles in bottom of removed sump and if you have a mind to, split the filter body and check for particles on underside of filter element.
If you find aluminium particles you need a new torque convertor.

Why would you want to run machinery on old oil?

And buy a quality filter or else! Mine was a blue one!

I was going to change my gearbox oil, took it to RR and they advised it was sealed for life! They said they have changed too many in the past and have ended up needing to replace the whole gearbox!

Make sure you can undo the filler before you drain the oil.

I wouldnt trust what LR say. ZF recommend servicing and they make the gearbox

did mine at the weekend easy job ,i was on a lift,took about 2 hrs,you do not have to use texaco oil,i used millers sp 111,i rang them and this was the best oil they do ,i also rang the gearbox company in hilton and he said it is not special oil needed .mine seems smoother now.

You have to remember "changing" the transmission oil on a GM 5L40E as fitted to a TD6 only changes about 6L out of a total capacity of 9.7L in the system ie about 60%.
You really need to "change" the transmission oil at least 3 times to end up with a reasonable quality of oil in the box.

I'll be doing mine soon and I plan to do 3 changes to really get it as close to all fresh as possible. My question is though, when do you change the filter? On the first or the last change?

I changed my filter during the third change on the basis the first and second changes I considered as a flushing process.
By the time you get to the third change the oil should be getting "reasonable".
I do know other people do it the other way round though, ie filter first.

Might have to put it to a pole!!!
