In the owners manual it says you have to remove the electric side step before you jack it up.

I am thinking this might only be the case if you were doing it with the scissor jack as it would probably foul on the steps, but if a garage was doing it with their high lift trolley jacks is it the same?

Can anyone comment?

Seems a right PITA to remove them each time you need to jack it up. Who invented these bloody things? Discovery 4 HSE

RR Sidesteps Operation:

To force the steps to stay out regardless of the position of the doors, what LR call 'roof access and jacking mode' get in the vehicle and close the doors, quickly insert the key in the dash and turn to position two, whilst steps still out, then hold the switch for about five seconds until the light in the switch illuminates continuously then remove the key. The steps will now stay out regardless of the position of the doors unless you drive away or lock the vehicle at which point they will return to their normal function.

If the steps are working and you want to disable them: insert the key in the dash in position 1 and hold the switch whilst turning the key to position 2, the light in the switch will flash twice to confirm the system is now off. To turn the system on repeat the procedure but the light will now flash three times to confirm the system is now on. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan, I already knew about how to lock them out, but I was hoping someone will have real life experience of this and be able to tell me if I've actually got to take the things off just so I can get my wheel balancing checked. Seems SUCH a faff! Discovery 4 HSE

When I had my FFRR with deployable steps, I had the wheels changed at a garage. I told them I had the steps and they just used their high lift trolley jacks. Rather than go in from the side, they went in from the front or back of the vehicle and lifted it no problem.

My dealer said you have to leave one of the doors on the side you want to lift up the vehicle ajar. This prevents the side step from retracting. No problem to lift the car with the side step like this.

Adam, yes you are correct. The scissor jack would hit the step... Only problem is, after a couple of years the steps corrode on because no one uses grease anymore in this world!!!

When i lock them out to go on my 2 poster ramp, i not only lock them out but open the rear door's, click the latch over with a screwdriver and press the lock button (on the door card) down for safety... That way the rear door cannot be closed by accident.

If for some reason the car stays on the ramp for a long period of time, i would simply un-plug the two steps underneath...

I've jacked mine up with the steps locked out using a bottle jack in the jacking points. Not much room to work the jack handle up and down but it works fine.  2012 5.0L S/C

I think everyone is missing the original point... The op said the steps should be removed when using the scissor jack that comes with the car,,,

i tend to jack mine up with a trolley jack in from the back or the front, if done this way you could leave the steps alone.. ... - .- -.

Stan, do you put the jack under the lower suspension arms rather than the official jacking points?

I did this once and it gets the wheel off the floor really quickly and easily, not all that jacking it 5 feet in the air malarkey. Discovery 4 HSE
