Hi did a quick search because I am sure this will have come up before but to no avail. A friend has a 2003 diesel range rover L322, he lost all drive last night.
His hill decent light is flashing and when he puts it in gear he can hear a crunching from the gearbox. I know an a standard 4x4 the dif can cause loss of drive but with the viscous centre dif that shouldn't be a problem.
I have not seen the car yet to confirm anything going to look Friday, it's a very low milage but has not had any gearbox oil changes.
There has been no other warning lights or symptoms just loss of drive. I will check for fault codes when I go round on Friday anything specific I can check for.

Does he mean the Hill Descent Control light i.e. right hand of the three round lights between the speedo & rev. counter or the Low Range Indicator light (i.e. to the right of PRND) which is flashing?

It’s possible that the transfer box is stuck between ranges (there’s a neutral position between high & low to allow the vehicle to be towed on its wheels). It might be worth your friend trying the Fuse 37 trick to recalibrate his shift motor:

Hi and thanks for the reply Phil. Went to have a look today there weren't any flashing lights when I tried it and the guy wasn't there so not sure about that bit. Started it put into drive and a horrendous grinding noise like you had missed a gear in a manual only louder.
Tried the procedure below the transfer neutral came up on dash and I could here the motor moving but still grinding in high or low.
I did try with the transfer box in neutral and the grinding was gone, I guess that points me to the transfer box?
There are no fault codes logged.

Not sure of the age of your friends FF but sounds like the front diff which was a recall a few years back on early cars, symptoms sound exactly like mine when the diff went

Very easy, look under your car (your friend inside the car, foot on brake!!) to the black propshaft, which is from transferbox to the front differential, your friend makes D in gearbox and you will see, if the propshaft is moving, when it moves, the differential part is defect. I will try that but the problem I see is it won't even go into gear without making this noise the second I get it near reverse without any movement of the car.

What we’re saying is :

The transmission is fine

The transfer box is fine

The spline has gone on the front propshaft which connects the transfer box to the front differential so the front propshaft is turning when you engage drive or reverse even though the vehicle isn’t moving. The noise that you can hear is coming from what is left of the spline teeth grinding against each other as they try to engage.

If it's the diff is there a way I can drive it on the old landrovers I could disconnect the prop put in diff lock and drive, I need to get it to my garage.

Ps meerbush your link does not work

Unfortunately the Torsen centre differential can only ‘bias’ the torque up to a maximum split of 65%/35% to either the front or rear – it can’t lock. If your front propshaft sees zero torque (i.e. it’s spinning) then unfortunately the rear propshaft will see zero torque too. You won’t get the car to move under its own steam I’m afraid.

Couple of questions, it doesn't look like its had the diff recall done is this still live, I heard somewhere it wasn't.
Is just changing the splined bush and drive shaft straight forward I read something about a crush washer?

Call a main dealer, they will be able to tell you, I blagged mine about 2 years ago however I think I was one of the last, good luck
