Been thinking about this a lot and earlier I remembered two things that I had dismissed at the time without a second thought. Firstly Dad mentioned it had started dropping oil recently, just a tiny amount. At the time I thought well it is a Land Rover but now I'm thinking perhaps that's a seal going because of the high crank case pressure. Maybe even a turbo seal.

The second thing was that earlier yesterday I had to jump start it (ongoing drainage issue, hopefully the new Final Stage Resistor I fitted yesterday will cure it) and once it started I held the revs up a bit to get the alternator to put some juice into the battery. I remember thinking it was very hard to hold the revs without wanting to climb. Now I'm thinking I was lucky it didn't keep on climbing without my input!

With this is in mind I think it's time to stop where I am and call the pro's.

Will be back to update the thread when the results are in, nothing more annoying than finding a thread with no final answer!

Modern diesels easily run away when they can pull fuel from somewhere else as there is no way for the computer to shut the airflow off.

best thing to do is have something on hand that could block the intake on the egr valve and just remove the pipe from it and then start it. If the turbo was blow then you will feel all the oil coming out of that pipe and not have to worry about a runaway engine as the oil cant get into the inlet tract to the engine itself  FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Well as promised back for an update. Turbo had indeed gone. Spannerman said we were lucky, 2 more miles and it could have caused serious damage. Recon turbo fitted and all now good. He did change the crankcase filter breather for me and said it needed changing but wasn't that bad.

Excellent result then, given the smoke.

Shouldn't have to worry about the turbo or the breather again now.
