Broken Key shank

Accidentally locked my key in the car with the engine running. When my wife brought the spare remote key it would not work. Horn beeped twice every time I pushed button. When I tried using the spare key shank, the button would not pop up quite all the way and it broke off the fob, finally after an hour I got lucky using pliers to hold the shank and the button popped up. The dealer wants $289 (US) for a new fob but says they use the VIN # so it comes with a new shank already cut to fit my car but another $60 to program it. I see some new fobs on ebay for $45 but not sure if they come with a shank or where I would go to have it cut to fit my car. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Thx! Mike

Earlier model keys are easy to program, but I'm sure the later models have to be done on the computer

No the $45 ebay specials won't work

How did you lock the car with the key inside/

I thought it was impossible to do that?

I thought so too and was surprised after it happened. Not sure what I did but I did it.

How did it happen? Were you using the rear hatch?

No, shut the front door and it locked. Don't know if I hit the button.
