Rear Arches - How long before corrosion returns

Edited as I poorly got my query across to start with:

Our rear arches were MD repaired to address corrosion (done single figure months ago). I've never been convinced that the bodyshop fully prep'd the arches before repainting them as there are surface imperfections that have been present since we had it done (looks like rust has been painted over in places gritty/bobbly looking under the silver paint). This suggests to me that some areas of failing paint were simply painted over. The bodyshop saw pictures I took of this query and actually inspected the car several months ago but said they were satisfied there was no underlying rust and the job had been done properly.

So, being paranoid about keeping them clean and preventing a flare up, I clean the arches weekly but I've noticed on the extreme edges in the last week, that orange oxidisation has appeared on a couple of small parts of the edge where the dirt under the arches tends to settle. The orange oxidisation will currently clean off (just) but my question is how long might I expect before the paint starts to fail (for example, if the weather/ice/snow 'bite' soon and I can't clean the rear arches for 2 or 3 weeks)?

Thoughts welcome, particularly from people who have maybe experienced a return of corrosion.

Thanks

I'd just bounce it back to the dealer and tell them to do it properly. Repair should be invisible once they've finished - and if there is rust they should cut out the rusty metal and weld a new piece in.

Thanks... bit embarrassed to take it back after all the issues we had with the car to start with... it's still a warrantied repair right enough. Just wondered if others had it come back and it was something to 'keep an eye on but live with' Thanks

I wouldn't be living with it I'm afraid. Either they do a proper job or they get it back.

You can stop the corrosion coming back thro from the rear by simply coating the rear surface of the arches with a liberal coating of general purpose grease.
Re-coat every year and you will never have corrosion. Thumbs Up

Thanks Simes and NDF... Thumbs Up

The garage did 'wax' all of the arches and all of the doors/ tailgate etc at the back end of the summer but obviously I'm not entirely convinced about the longevity of the rust treatment/ paint finish under the rear arches.

@ NDF - I would happily additionally coat the rear archs with grease although I'm presuming that for the grease to work, a convincing job would need to be done to fix the corrosion in the first place?

The dealer will get payment from landrover and it should be perfect. Complain take it back and tell them this it will be in there best interest to sort it out

@pld 118

I'm afraid I'm of the opinion that if a dealer/bodyshop has "repaired" and repainted the rear arches due to them being corroded, the corrosion will ultimately manifest itself again in a few years. If the "repair " consisted of new wheel arches being fitted and painted then no problem, but I would still grease the back of them yearly.
The rear arches are subject to a very hostile environment as regards water, salt and accumulated dirt and if left unprotected will imo ultimately corrode.
Simple grease is a very good water-proofer which I have used extensively on cars for more years than I care to remember with the result that our cars generally do not corrode, which is why I keep them for a good few years.
Grease applied to a rusty surface will stop any further corrosion as long as it is checked and re-applied as necessary.

I had mine tidied up and then fitted the wheel arch protectors from other models, that we're never fitted to the L322.

You may have found the thread already ;

Thanks Mark,

These were before and after pictures taken last July. The area pictured is the area covered by the closed door rubber seal. The rest of the arch has a thin black rubber strip quite tightly fitted over it so I presume hat's what you refer to and that you don't fit an additional rubber strip to the part of the arch that I picture in this post and where the rubber door seal fits over the arch?

If you look closely at the 'after' picture (taken in July), you can see imperfection under the paint finish and I put this back to the main dealer querying if the rust remained and they replied the bodyshop was satisifed no rust remained and what could be seen were paint surface imperfections that would polish out:

There isnt a strip fitted as standard, but all other lr models have one.

Found that the one from the fl or rrs fits over the area in your pic, protecting it from drama.
Put a bit of grease in the seal and it will protect better.....

The rubber door seal doesnt completely cover the area! Better to add the extra strip, only a couple of quids. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I've fitted the big rubber strips over all the areas, including where the rear door rubber thing shuts. that's why I had to buy 4, as I didn't want joins.

I got the bodyshop to stonechip my arch lips, which you can't see when the extra strips are on.

Here is a pic of that area with the strip on ;

The pitting shown in the 'after' picture is rust pitting, even if in there opinion they had rubbed it down suficiantly, they could not have removed the rust from these pits and it will always just be a matter of time before its back...

I would not dare hand a job like that back to a customer... Embarassed

As ever, thanks for the helpful replies:

@mjd - The strips you've fitted are the same as the ones that cover half our rear arches. So does one full one fit the whole arch without cutting?

@ CTC and/ or others who wish to offer a thought - So if it was you would you take it back to them/ how will they fix it (I'm a big boy and wouldn't quote you anyway). It's well within 12 months since it was done and I've an email from them saying it was done right, it's warrantied and any problems etc (it's just embarassing going over old ground yet again)?
