Stiff steering ( again ) . New spin on old problem .

Hi . My 2004 Vogue is unsteerable on tickover . It is overly stiff at 50 - 60 MPH on A roads . Call me old fashioned , but when I owned XJ6s in the early 1980s , the steering was featherlight at all speeds and you just got used to it . My P38 has no newfangled servotronic sh*te on it , but feels safe and solid at all speeds and in all conditions . My plan is to purchase a 12v to 9v reducer and plug it straight into the servotronic socket under the wheel arch . In theory , this should set the steering to the lighest setting at all times . Has anyone tried this already ? No amateur BS theories please . Realists only need reply .

ok than
problems with stiff steering comes from
a: power steering pump - sometimes revving engine up to 3000
loosen up stiff steering for a moment (than you have an answer)
sometimes pump is so dead that it doesn't not help either

b: mentioned by you servotronic valve -broken or short wiring etc
as valve is connected straight into BCU be careful as short in most cases leads into
BCU failure and stiff steering

I ve seen all - faulty wires faulty valves as well as faulty bcu's

Even if the wires have not been shorted and connector is still on place i would still suspect
bcu seen only one or 2 faulty valves in the past (however time is passing and have not worked on vehicle older than 2008 for a while)

If the wiring was broken and repaired and still no servo than its 99% bcu

Hope all that's enough realistic for the start

Mine was stiff when standing and ok on the move, i found the lower steering joint the problem a good few goes with wd40 and it got better then i put some light oil on steering a lot lighter now when standing on tickover. Also check your tyre pressure if they are low you will get stiffer steering at tickover.
Cheap fix for me and well worth a look at that first.

BCU & Servertronic valve are both under £100.

Thanks for the good advice . Will lube the joint when (if) the rain stops . Also , £100 seems very cheap for a BCU ?

still heavy steering....this might sound weird, but I had a good car till I fitted a dashcam, and used a piggyback fuse on I think fuse 41 in the glovebox. which I think said it was for the rain sensor. as I piggybacked it, sensor should still work. however on driving it, my steering was quite heavy, to the point I thought I had no fluid. (dashcam working etc) I did some initial power steering checks, and figured if I take out that piggyback fuse it might cure it, and it did. nothing in fusebox says it was connected to my steering system, but somehow it was.
have you done any wiring mods?

I saw that the servotronic is labelled as a different fuse number, but it certainly affected the steering, I didn't notice it immediately, and didn't link the two together as it was a different day when I drove it.
I need to piggyback from another fuse, what's yours on please Stan? and is it (piggy)fuse to left or to right?
