Water in fuel

quite a bit of standing water on the roads....

went through a little puddle, with resultant spray of water as puddle was more of a pond !

bong !

Water in fuel....see handbook.

well a few minutes later the warning cleared itself, and there is no mention in the handbook of what to do in the event of such a bong.....

any thoughts? The FFRR seems to be running fine....both during the bong, and now.

As its such a new vehicle and obviously still under warranty, i would get it checked by your main dealer pal... Ordinarily it would point to a poorly serviced older vehicle (not having had the fuel filter changed in years & years but is obviously not the case with yours sir...

thanks Craig - it is having a service in a couple of weeks.
Is there anything in particular I should be asking to have checked or replaced under warranty?

I would ask them to check if the fuel filter is due changing?

Ordinarily the light/warning comes on to tell you there is water in the trap (in the bottom of the filter) not unusual in the current climate. If the fuel filter in not regularly changed or you keep filling the tank with cheap (often supermarket) fuels then this will usually be the cause...

But, as i stated earlier. This usually takes a while to materialise and is often down to either poor servicing (not changing filters) or fitting cheap & nasty parts (probably not in your case)

If it's due a fuel filter at this next service then this should sort it Thumbs Up If it's not due one, ask them to check when it was last changed (and if it was physically done) as they often get missed by the Stealers Whistle

Hi
Just in case you could ask them to check the electr connection to the fuel filter.
It happend with a lot of water so if the electrical connection (seal in the contact) is not good it could give a false signal.

Regards

The fuel filter (and ts electrical connection) are in the engine bay and way out of harmful waters way. (Unless you were wading over the bonnet) so I doubt it was a fault, The tank and all the lines are sealed and would not get water ingress unless you have a leak which would be obvious. Craigs suggestion of the water in cheap or supermarket fuel is probably the correct reason and just a coincidence after you went through the puddle.

Water is heavier than diesel so always sinks to the bottom. A change of fuel filter (they are only about 20 quid and a simple job to do on a TDV8) will solve your problem.
Thumbs Up

I agree I only mention it because I've got a problem with it when the seal in the electrical connecter proved to be gone.
That caused when it was wet it triggered a signal.

never use supermarket diesel - only BP Ultimate or Shell V-Power.

chances of this being seen in 20,000 miles only on the occasion i drive though a huge puddle at speed for the first time with a sheet of water rendering forward vision impossible for a second or two being put down to co-incidence? i doubt it.

am not sure however why the fault has cleared itself...maybe it is the electrical connector.
Craig - will do as you say and ask dealer to replace fuel filter anyway. If I asked them to "investigate" it might take them a while. but perhaps I will make them aware of the problem, just in case it re-appears and i need to make a warranty claim.

its probably something simple as condensation in the tank or filter....

There is not a lot to investigate just see in the electrical connector if the rubber seal is stil present.

Scotland 2012 Range Rover Westminster TDV8 Santorini Black

I had the same issue on my 2012 Westminster. Started up the car one morning and headed into the villiage, halfway there the warning "WATER IN FUEL" popped up on the dash. The engine was running fine.
When I parked up and nipped into the shop, I came out and started the car again, the same warning came up again.
Got home, switched it off and left it an hour, started it up again and no warning and never had the warning again??!!

Strange................

I had this last year. Same engine and MY. I called LR Assist as there is nothing in the handbook! They said I needed to have the fuel tank drained because it was dodgy fuel if it came up again. But it didn't. It also came up after going through water as you describe. Sounds like a dodgy sensor to me.

I had this message pop up today. I had just driven (slowly) through a large puddle. After a minute, it went out on its own.
Can you point me to the rubber seal please.
