best bet is to get the oil drained from the sumps and check for any metal in the oil, this will give an idea if any bearing damage has occurred with the engine being low on oil.

There's been another thread very recently about a TDV8 with similar sounding problem to yours. As i remember the other car had possibly injested it's turbo, which also sucks all the oil out of the engine. |

I also personally know of examples involving remapped engines & increased fuelling & upped boost pressures resulting in warped manifolds and bearing failure = engine totally goosed. |
