2007 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Java Black

Hi guys first time on this forum.

Can someone help??

I have a tdv8 2007 with 145k. Had the EGR valve done a few weeks ago after that was driving like a dream.

Well on Sunday nite driving back from Liverpool was do gna approx 90mph decided to do a bit of a kick down to get home that few minutes earlier, when I felt the car was loosing power. I could hear some slight knocking sound more like when your injector goes rather than a engine knock. I could smell oil burning and a little smoke inside the car. Could not tell if I was blowing smoke as it was at nite but I presume so. So I pulled over to the hard shoulder the engine ran for about 10 seconds then turned of. I then tried to start the engine again it turned over for a few seconds then after that went dead. Now I can just hear a click noise from the engine when I tried to start. The engine does not turn over.

Finally I called out recovery and when we looked under the bonnet I saw that the big intercooler hose on the driver side had a large split, and that's not all... After further investigation I found oil leak from what looks like its coming from the passenger side turbo. A bit hard to see but I'm sure that's where it is from.

So anyway I have now got the car down to a friends car showroom went to check the next day as it was quite late that night and have notice the car has no oil in it, looks like the turbo may have sucked out the oil.

It all happened with 30seconds from running fine to engine seizing. It the holiday period and I have to wait till everything opens on the 6th jan. It giving me sleepless nites thinking of the cost that it might be.

Done lots of research worst case Sanario engine seized. Can it be unsezied?
Seen videos on YouTube of people using wd40 on the heads to loosen up, is this possible?

Good chance you've just bust an inter cooler hose
Done it a few times on hi boost defenders
You will always get a small bit of oil in high milage turbos from the seal
Chances are hose split lost boost and it's gone in some fail safe mode

Hi ragerover

Thanks for your advice, just a few things....

So if you intercooler hose splits the seals on the turbo can blow which results in the engine oil leaking??

The dip stick is bone dry now!

Does the turbo still need changing if it is just the oil seal blown??

If the engine is out of oil does the "fail safe mode" kick in?

I was not to sure if the tdv8 07 had a fail safe mode

best bet is to get the oil drained from the sumps and check for any metal in the oil, this will give an idea if any bearing damage has occurred with the engine being low on oil.

probably not cranking over now as you will have drained the battery trying to start it on the hard shoulder. 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I dnt think it is a flat battery as a put a new one in a few weeks ago, and it only turned over once before it just started to make a ticking sound.

Do you know where the starter motor is? Is it situated behind the passenger side turbo. Maybe it has got covered with the leak ?

Can those engines seize that quick?

There's been another thread very recently about a TDV8 with similar sounding problem to yours. As i remember the other car had possibly injested it's turbo, which also sucks all the oil out of the engine.

Been talking to my son who has his own garage and with tdv8's with high miles it's a common fault
Injesting turbos

The rang my mate who works in development at JLR and it's " not unheard of " officially. Un officially ..." Quite common on high miler or heavily tuned"

I also personally know of examples involving remapped engines & increased fuelling & upped boost pressures resulting in warped manifolds and bearing failure = engine totally goosed.
