Get a gearbox update done at the same time. It resets the adaptions and really livens up the car.

Gearbox update! hows that done? Is it software, ecu mod or a mechanical thing

Where are the instructions that you printed off Elena? I have searched but can't find them anywhere?

Mine has done 135k miles with no gearbox oil change and it is still smooth as silk on changes.

I have thought long and hard about flushing it but it seems to be a hung parliament on here about it. I have heard horror stories that it might encourage issues that the old oil is holding back. I change the engine oil on a regular basis but would hate to spend money on a gearbox oil change to only bring forward a box rebuild too. Tom

I have the same quandary, mine is on 76k 2003 v8 rr, gearbox fine, don't know wether to change it or not, local autobox service center says yes, [owner runs a v8 rr] local indie says no, [owner runs a tdv6] what to do????????
my car has no towbar, but I will be fitting one as I will be towing my 1400kg caravan next year, which will obviously put a bit more stress on it, but if it aint broke!!!

Also the colour of the ATF (ask the mechanic to pour it into a clear plastic bottle so you can see the colour well). If it is quite dark and smells a bit "burned" then it was very much time to replace it.

Also you could feel the consistency of it, if it is still very slick/oily it is fine but if it starts feeling a bit "sticky" when you rub it between your fingers, it has deteriorated quite a bit.

All of these things are very subjective unfortunately. Having the ATF analysed is the best way to go but that goes a bit far to be honest. I mean the oil is out anyway.

Most important is correctly filling the box afterwards. So the car should be level, then the box should be filled according to procedure, run the engine for a bit and cycle through the gears 2 or 3 times (leave it in every gear for say 5 seconds) and then final fill with engine running in idle, in park and fill till it comes out of the fill plug hole. I don't know if the GM box also needs to have that done at a specific temperature, like the ZF needs.

refill/level plug located on the left hand side of the transmission. When checking the transmission fluid level the fluid
must be between 35°C and 45°C. Only Texaco ETL-7045E Automatic transmission fluid should be used for refilling /
topping up the transmission.

My 2002 TD6 Vogue has 161000 Miles on the clock, Going to do a gearbox flush and filter change as it makes a harsh rumble noise at low revs and high torque. I only started hearing the rumble when heavy towing but it started to appear when not towing.

I bought the texamatic oil from fleet factors, 20 litres for £70.58 (£3.53/L inc VAT)

I am also going to remove the EGR and fit a speedhawk tuning box if they haven't been done

The problem is unless you have driven the vehicle from new you can't assess the state of the oil. Had mine changed this week and it was absolutely feeelthy (68k).

Parts ordered, I will be servicing my gearbox asap, and all the transfer boxes and diffs etc. I have been doing this for over 10 years on all my Audi ZF gearboxes and it's always helped to iron out any wrinkles and get things smooth again.

I can’t believe the question, it’s like say the engine is running fine why change the oil.

Just do it, the only reason not to is your selling it next week and even then it’s a great selling point being able to say gear box oil and filter have been done.

I’ve decided to do a gearbox drain and top up every time I change the engine oil. It only adds around 30 minutes to the normal service time and the cost of the 6/7 litres of gearbox oil is penny’s compared to a new box.

For the refill procedure buy a cheap laser/infrared thermometer off eBay for £7 to ensure you are at the correct temperature for the final top up.
