Eh, there wasn't an SDV8 L322 was there?
No RR is ever going to be a paragon of reliability! Laughing

How many P38 owners were saying similar things about the L322 when it was introduced and then a few years later after the used prices came down and there are more about they all started buying them and deciding they were the best thing since sliced bread?

Every car forum on the internet for every marque you will find the same discussion between owners of the old model and the early buyers of the new model. It will always be thus.

Point taken re: old models, I'm sure we all find comfort in what we already know...
However there are ways in which an L322 is demonstrably preferable to an L405. I'm not sure that this was ever the case with the P38 v L322. And, obviously, there weren't really any forums similar to this one to discuss it on! I'm sure that the L322 was better received than the L405 has been. Besides which, there are some models that are usually seen as a step forward by existing owners e.g. the MK7 Golf? I dunno, I guess this debate needs 5 years to age! Laughing

Probably need to wait for the next new fullfat as great design seems to skip one generation. Classic looked great, P38 so and so, L322 a modern take on the original, L405 again so and so.

I ordered a new L322 as soon as they came out and was driving a P38 4.6HSE at the time. I instantly thought this was progress. I don't feel the same about the L405.

I fail to see how a MY10+ L322 is any less flashy than the L405. Both have cheese grater grilles, spangly lights and lots of Noble plated this and that.

No question it could be a lot worse, but strip away the tinsel and it's still flashier, less dignified and less substantial - bulging arches, sneering front end, sloping roofline, sloping rear window, shallower glasshouse, horrid rear spoiler, tawdry lights, fake door vents, fake bonnet vent, vents in the bumper, pointless Gypsy Stripe along the sill etc.

It's a far more generic shape, far less imposing and far fussier (look at the mess of lines coming together at the rear, the vents and so on). I don't see why it has to look sportier when the Sport already exists.

For me debates like this are often settled with the old "if you have unlimited funds or could pick one for free .... What would it be?" For me it would be an late L322 AB with all boxes ticked!

The L405 is the better car though.

Better in what ways but?

Smoother ride, more tech, more prestige.....all 'better' I would agree
But a better looking car.....mmm I don't agree.

Interestingly, it looks like Liz 2 might agree with us... has she kept a few L322s back just like Maggie Thatcher did with the Rover P5(Clock the reg)? The truth is out there.

Think we'd established it's not the better design!

Queen's driver could have put it into access mode for her ...

The L322 is better, I have the keys, the pink slip and its on my drive I can use it whenever I want Thumbs Up

The L405 is in the showroom, or on other peoples drives Big Cry
