Would you replacement the windscreen...?

I had a Censored lorry cut me up over the weekend, without warning ,whilst I was overtaking him. He was on the phone and didn't even see me!!! Thankfully, no accident occurred however, he did gift me a stone-chip to the windscreen Big Cry Censored

Having heard some worrying stories from other FF owners that have had problems with rattles, seals, and electrics having had theirs replaced. would you bother replacing yours for a stone-chip? ...I'm in two minds.

Its quite a chunk out the glass about the size of a small finger nail, but no cracks and isn't within MOT fail area, fortunately!

Does anyone know if Auto Windscreen use genuine LR glass...? Has anybody else experienced problems with them...?

Regards

I had my screen replaced two years ago as I sustained a large chip, within MOT failure zone, which started to crack extensively. Auto Windscreens did it very efficiently (it was the heated but non rain sensitive type) and not had any problems with leakage or anything since - that'll be the kiss of death wont it?!

I had mine done by Auto Windscreens a few months back. The third one they fitted was a genuine LR one which is fine. See the thread below for the problems I encountered. If you do get it done insist on a genuine LR screen as there is definitely a difference - even the Pilkington one (who make the screens for LR) was wrong in my opinion.

Re: Would you replacement the windscreen...?

Hi,

If you decide not to have it replaced you should perhaps consider taking it to a glass firm and ask if they can repair the chip by filling it, as chips can become cracks and can weaken the windscreen (screen repairs are often free as part of your insurance policy).

These windscreen repair and replacement companies will use genuine branded parts, if you request them but you might have to pay a little extra for the privilege. However, often, they will use a market leading glass manufacturer such as Pilkington and the only thing that is missing from the replacement screen is the stamped branded name of the car manufacturer.

If it's a national company and they do a replacement that results in problems, they will fix it. Autoglass fitted a replacement branded screen to a car of ours and slightly damaged the wiper arm and internal pillar linings. When pointed out to them, without fuss, they sent someone out straight away to replace what they had damaged and they fitted the screen well.

Ask them if they have fitted your make and model of car before letting them do the work.

Thumbs Up

I was in the same predicament a couple of months ago. I had a large chip, but also water coming in via the A pillar - fun & games Rolling Eyes

Mine was replaced by National Windscreens who did a good job. When I 'phoned initially, because of the reading I'd done on the Forum, I was able to ask the right questions ie:

Have you done this before ?
What steps do you take to ensure all the functions of the screen work ?
Do you replacement any trim parts with new ?

The guy I spoke with appreciated that I had some knowledge of the car and the difficulties involved. What I would say if you are going to have it done is take it to their premises to leave it and give them all the time in the world. Again, they appreciated that with mine.

I had a slight hiccup with a loose A pillar trim, but a sharp thump sorted it. No problems since -

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

Autoglass did mine and its important that they have TWO fitters on site as its a heavy screen and a two man job.

The guy admitted that they are a little tricky to do but he said as long as he had his big strong buddy with him all goes smoothly.

I'm not sure if I was paranoid but mine seemed to "creak" after the new screen?

I would take it and see if it can be repaired with a resin. It is usually free and a service provided by autoglass and their ilk.

Autoglass did mine earlier this year, made a good job but now i have a chip in it it is going to the workshop to see if it can be repaired.... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Careful with the resin. I was told a resin repair was NOT possible with cars fitted the the heated windshield. They said the windshield heats up quickly, expands and the resin can come loose.

Nor heard that. Will ask the question, its not a failure mot wise yet as it is out of the zone and is a small chip 2-3mm but there is the start of a crack, about 5mm out of each side.

So would be good if they can fix it! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
