Towbar electrics?

Hi,

New to the forum having bought a VogueSE TDV8 in June Smile

Tried to find a good forum for a while and finally arrived here...........THE best RR forum by far Thumbs Up

Hope you Techno Bods can help me with a small problem; I had a Westfalia Towbar and OE electrics fitted by a trailer dealer that fits for Land Rover dealers locally as I wanted to have the original spec type fitted. Overall I'm very pleased with the job they did, including going back after 500 towing miles to have them check things over, all good - except; when I plug the caravan into the 13pin electrics the little green trailer sign on the dash comes on and stays on, instead of flashing in sync with the indicators. All the lights etc work as they should but I understood the trailer symbol should act as a repeat flasher for the 'van indicators. The guy at the installers said I would need a Main Dealer to plug into the car to re-set it to recognize the trailer electrics? Obviously I don't want to pay a Main Dealer some stupid amount for a simple little plug in job if that's the case.

Any help/advice/solution would be very gratefully received.

Many thanks

Peejay

Trailer light does stay on. Perfectly normal. Mine does the same, thinkit is different on earlier cars where it did flash.

If there is a lighting fault it shows up on the bottom display "check trailer lights"

Sounds like its working how it should. Thumbs Up check by removing a bulb from your trailer lights.

That said there is some debate on the need to program the car. A good lr specialist should be able to do it for a small charge. Cost me £20. But others out there dont reckon it needs doing...... Who knows. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Mine too and perfectly normal. I find it reassuring as you know the trailer electrics are definitely connected.

Ian and BigBoy,

Did you have the towbar fitted after you got your cars and if so did you have anything re-programmed?

I know everything works okay but the manual states the trailer light on the dash should flash in sequence with the caravan indicators and I just like things to be as they were meant to be,

Also I think it's a requirement that you have either an audible warning or a visual warning that they are working correctly?

Mine was fitted by a main dealer

Green light stays on whenever the trailer is plugged in.

The way it works is the car performs a regular check and detects if any of the bulbs aren't working - it will then display a message to check your trailer lights.

A better system really as it's not just checking your indicators, but all the bulbs.

Mine was fitted by the main dealer. They fitted the towing module, and if I recall, they just had to activate it, ie switch it on on the ecu. It didn't need any reprogramming as far as I remember.
As Alistair says the system does do regular self checks to make sure the system is working and communicating.
Land Rover do update the systems regularly. It is possible you may have a manual that hasn't been updated. Unlikely, but always a possibility.

My towbar and electrics were on the car when I bought it and as it was an ex land rover owned vehicle I assume it was fitted by land rover.

My light stays on when trailer connected. As Big Boy R44ROV says maybe the manual needs to be updated. I know in the faultmate there is a setting for tow bar electrics installed. Just a yes no drop down box if i recall, then it's saved to the ecu. Sounds like it's working fine to me.
