Driving home from work, all seemed well.........did a 90 degree left turn out of a T junction and thought that the steering wheel suddenly resisted movement slightly more than usual, and then freed up to be much lighter than normal.

Then the instrument cluster lit up like a christmas tree......

I hate to say it but I would try a battery disconnect and reconnect before anything else.

Could be a duff ABS sensor, E39 BMWs do the same.

the 90 degree turn might have dis-lodged or broken the ^ abs sensor.. ... - .- -.

Steering wheel all the way left and then right? Previously..

As the abs is the first in line of all the sensors if it has a fualt, it triggers off all the other sensors.

Take your abs ECU apart and check for any water ingress (the design is crap and the bottom of the slide holds water!) or corrosion on the small prongs. Quick squirt of electrical contact should be a good idea too.

Had a quick look on RAVE to read that the speed signal is from the ABS sensor on the left rear wheel.

If its not there, speedo does not work and servotronic steering is at max assistance, as it thinks car is stationary.

Will have a look under there tomorrow.

MMmm Failed to get to work this morning.

It appears in hindsight, I should not have reset the systems with the IID Tool to see if it sorts the issue, as now the car has all systems live again, but what appears to be a faults ABS sensor.

As the car is now getting a non valid signal, if I accelerate, the ABS comes on, and the power of the engine is wound back. It is not driveable as it coasts to a halt pretty much on its own with my foot on the throttle.

I'm waiting for the garage to arrive with a low loader.

If I'd left the systems alone, they would be disabled and I'd have been able to drive it.

Hi, first time posting but I had a very similar fault on my 07 TDV8 last night.
Driving along at 30mph, suddenly everything lights up on the dash - gearbox, suspension, engine, brakes etc and it loses power and drops into limp home... Pulled over and turned it off, restart and everything appeared fine, drive about 1 mile and the same again. Coasted to a halt, tried the restart etc but this time the engine is barely running and everything is still lit up.

I had a diagnostic machine in the boot so plugged in and most of the faults where for the various system ecu's (I didn't notice an abs sensor fault tho but it could have had one). I tried clearing everything but it still wouldn't run etc, one sensor fault I did notice was fuel rail pressure sensor...
Ended up calling the AA out, patrol came out(about an hour after I last tried to run it), started it up and it appeared to be running ok with no lights on the dash etc! He said that it could be the alternator fad as he was checking the voltage on the battery it started to miss every now and again, he suspected the fuel pressure sensor and arranged a low loader.

Got home dropped off the wagon, started it up and not a sign of anything wrong! Plugged in with the diagnostics and the fuel sensor fault had gone (I didn't clear the last one I saw) but the various ecu's where showing still. Ran it up and down the road a few times and not a cough, splutter or anything.....

From reading the symptoms that you describe I'm wondering if I have an abs sensor starting to fail myself, just a bit worried about how to find it without needing to be recovered again.....?!
Having scanned around on here I've read that the same symptoms could also point to the alternator failing (but I didn't have the battery light on - just about every other light but that one tho!!)
Aargh, where to start now it all appears ok??!!

TDV8s and Td6s are very different electrically, so don't necessarily assume it's an ABS issue.

My trusted garage can't collect it until tomorrow morning, so prob won't find out any more till perhaps Monday.

As I've reset the lights, they say they will have a look at the live values coming from the wheels, and expect to see one not sending a signal. Will have to take it from there. I backed it on the ramps in my garage, and can't see any wires adrift from the hubs......

As Martin has said, I think the TDV8 is a different bit of kit, prob no BMW electronic systems on that. I would imagine it'd stored some fault codes though, so it may be best getting a specialist garage have a look with more bespoke kit, to see if they can diagnose to more detail.

Been back out to look at it this morning and there are still no signs of a fault, there must be something that caused it?!
Having looked around on here I've seen a few posts with similar symptoms but no conclusions as to what caused it or how it was fixed...? Maybe I'm just not looking properly?

Having worked all over the car at various times there appears to be an awful lot of BMW parts (and I suspect systems) still on the TDV8.

Right, I'm off to break down somewhere(!), at least it's comfy to sit in for long periods of time....!

I've had to take the day off too! I commute into Derbyshire so I have to find the fault ASAP so the same thing doesn't happen again. It's driveable for now but feels a little like Russian roulette......!

GTA 5, now there's an idea...!

Quick update. Garage looked at the car today, and as suspected, there is no signal from the rear left ABS sensor regarding wheel rotation.

They have checked the cabling but can normally disconnect the sensor and have a look in with an endoscope to see what the toothed wheel ring thing is like that the sensor reads.

Unfortunately, they cannot get the sensor out as its a bit corroded, so I've had to agree some labour for a hub strip down. They will then be able to see if I just need a new sensor or whether the ring has callapsed, corroded, broken, in which case I'll need a new CV joint.

Talk of Sensor about �70 odd and the joint about �196 if its that thats broken........

He has ordered all the parts today for delivery in the morning and when he strips it down will at least be able to fix, and then send back the parts he hasn't used.
