285/50/20 - Will they fit - Any Help Please ?

Hi Guys

Quite new to the forum so Hello !

Just looking for some help. I ve just bought a MY2011 60plate 4.4tdv8 SE and looking to put some winter tyres on. I have left over from the last car a very new set of Cooper Zeon's that are 285/50/20. I know the standard fitment is 255/50/20 but I could just do without another set of tyres clogging up my garage.

I had a puncture yesterday so whilst the mobile guy was at my house we tried fitting one of the 285's and it fitted on the car (and looked mean!) but was very close to the suspension on the inside. In reality not close to the suspension but there is a v small 1" spike plastic spike coming down from the gas strutt.

So 2 questions - does anyone know what the 1" spike bit is for as it seems a bit redundant
and also - has anyone fitted this size before ? I think I saw a post saying they had but had put 5mm spacers on ?

Also I am slightly worried that if the tread fills up with mud it might knock this 1" plastic spike off ?

Thanks in advance Smile

Jonny
ps - insurance company have no issue with it as they are still 20" tyres so not a modification apparantly and a not has been placed on file.

Interesting question Jonny...I'm about to take delivery of a 2012 TDV8 L322, it's fitted with 285/40/22 wheels/tyres. So overall probably a bit bigger diameter than yours, I'll have to look and see if it's knocked off that spike you're talking about!

i had 295/45/20 on my td6 with no clearance problems but my tyres were on RRS wheels which have more of an offset and a larger width.

your speedo will be out as well,

i would consider getting a set of RRS rims and sticking the 285's onto them, you could use these in the winter and your current ones for the summer. ... - .- -.

Thanks Greg it would be interesting.

Stan, I will look out for some 20" RRS wheels but do wonder if a simple spacer might solve it. Surely, there is a calculation that someone alot smarter than me can do to work out the difference of the offset between the two and then the size spacer required ?

Alot easier and cheaper to store a spacer in my garage than some more wheels and tyres etc !!!

Regards

Jonny

spacers are an alternative certainly but they cost about £200 new..there are some used ones on ebay as well..they tend to be 30mm for each one so that will give you plenty of clearance and of course a better 'stance' look.... ... - .- -.

Hi Stan

I found http://wheelspacers.uk.com/ who do 3,4,5,6,7&10mm spacers tailor made for the RR and they are made in germany and shipped to the UK for £65 for 4 spacers. I was hoping a 5/6/7mm spacer would be ok. I think 30mm would push the tyre into problems on the other side of the wheel arch.

I think they are relatively simple piece of metal but have the correct centre bore rather than getting a universal one.

I need to measure the inside of the nut to check enough threads are left to actually lock the wheel on aswell.

I will try and post a pic of the 1" plastic nib when it stops raining

Regards J

This is the part sticking down towards the tyre that might get knocked off ? For some reason it has yellow chalk/paint on it ?

Any ideas ?

Cheers

Cheers Mr Tee

Did you do the wheel arch modification mentioned in the other post - below the fuel filler ?

Is that plastic 1" think just where they were injection moulded then ?

Cheers

Hi Stan

I have come across these which are off a 60 plate supercharged. Do you happen to know what offset they would be compared to my 60 plate Vogue se. Or does it have to be off a RRS ?

Thanks
