CV Gaiter Clip

When I had the RR MOT'd earlier this week, the chap pointed out that the clip on one of my front CV gaiters was not tight enough, and that grease was seeping out.

Just been under the car, and I can turn the metal clip round with some pressure with my fingers.

Does anyone know how to tighten it further ?

I know there is a tool available, but buying one seems a bit overkill if I've only got to nip it up a bit.

Many thanks
Mark

OK....I did choose photo and added it..........will try the old way.....

If you have trouble crimping a cable tie is more than adequate and very easy to fit. Wink

I just assumed I could crimp it some more and it would tighten enough.

No idea how to remove properly if you want to replace....... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Well, I managed to borrow some pincers and nipped the clip up enough to stop it moving without the gaiter. If I try and spin the clip now, the whole driveshaft turns.

Unfortunately, what you can't see from the picture, is that the smaller clip on the other end is not even on the gaiter and is loose on the shaft. I managed to pry the end of it up with a screwdriver and unclip it, but can't squeeze it enough when it the correct position to get it to clip together.

I've just took it off and put on a massive cable tie. Will have to see how we go.

That was the same garage that damaged my rear bumper when they last had it. Suffice to say I haven't used them fo a while now.... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I'd just come back to this thread to mention a jubilee clip......

As its the smaller end, I could prob find one that would fit, but a mechanic mate of mine has said as they are heavier, you can sometimes have balance issue as it spins round.

See what he's saying, but not sure you'd notice it on a TD6........

To be fair, I expect the cable tie to come off, and I'll end up back at a different garage or trying a jubilee clip.

Thanks 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

As long as the cable tie is tight and has a good grip on the boot it shouldn't come off as some aftermarket cv boot kits come with cable ties and not the metal clamp type like you have.

A jubilee clip is what I've used on the inner end of my CV gaiter. I've got the proper tool and still mashed up the proper clip...

A warning about jubilee clips on CV gaitors.
When the front wheels are on any sort of lock the screw part of the jubilee clip can catch the rubber boot and tear it. Then you have a bigger job to do.
A cable tie should stay on for years provided it's been put on correctly.

I am having trouble with my front CV boot straps. Unfortunately I took the old ones off and fitted new aftermarket ones that I cannot get to seal. Tomorrow I will be double strapping it with the new one next to the first but 180 degrees to it. If that doesnt work then maybe one of those wire tie devices would be my next option.

Got back from a 1800km trip over the weekend and during the trip noticed the inner front guards acquiring a smattering of cv grease. Not wanting to look under the car while away today I put it up on the hoist to see the drivers side had emptied itself of grease and while the passenger one was down to about half. Also everything was covered in grease which was a bit of a give away and the clamps had loosened though when fitted they had no movement.
Fortunately the Clamptite tool I ordered last week arrived yesterday so I was well armed to tackle the job after an initial experiment with a wooden hammer handle. Using the Clamptite on the cv is a two man job as you have to keep tension while your assistant adjusts the loops on the opposite side, well it was in my case but I am sure experience will make it easier. The wire pulls up nice and tight leaving absolutely no movement on the band or boot which is good. So fingers crossed this will work and end my weeks of leaking cv boots but if that fails I have another product to fall back on
http://www.dixonvalve.com/product/4001.html
which I picked up in Whangarei on the weekend. Confused
