Well done mate. Phew!

It was a pig of a job to do, mainly because of having to get the centre console out. A tip if anyone ever has to do it- just take the screws out and lift the rear of the console up and slide a broom stale across the seats to hold it up out of the way. The ecu is under the heater blower which is fixed to a metal frame. That frame then needs to be unbolted to access the ecu. No need to take the front clock panel out as RAVE suggests

had this on a 2002 i bought, RSW lead would show but not clear fault. bought a secondhand battery disconnect cable as that was the offending text fault along with 'internal error'. still on!
So, bought a secondhand SRS ECU and tried it, things were worse, must have come from a crashed rolled car etc, about 10 faults etc. again, couldn't clear them. saw ad on the 'bay of life' for 'SRS ecu crash data removal' and was gonna send the original off to have it 'cleared' for about £35 but saw another ecu for similar money, bought that, and all clear now. -solution: bad ecu. -or maybe a 'latched' ecu. I have a theory that a car will latch the 'incident' to the memory so it can be analised in event of dreadful crash etc, before offender can hide/bodge etc.
yes, a sod to change, but i found some lost coins which always put smiles on our faces! and some polo mints, and Mcfries -mint was a bit soft and tastless.
interestingly, the SRS light was in the service company history file (i rang them, previous owner was warned, but testbook could not clear it!) and this year (2013) SRS light is an MOT fail. so many owners will be arriving here looking for a solution. get a diagnostic check, check offending item, if unplugged, replug, (ie doorcard etc) then go for a seconhand GARAUNTEED CLEAR OF FAULTS ecu

Annoyingly, when I returned to retest the car, the tester informed me that a loophole had been discovered in the new legislation.
Apparently, if the light doesn't come on at all, it's not a fail. If it comes on and stays on (like mine) then it's a fail. The answer then folks, is to take the bulb out of the dash or cut the supply to it. Wish I'd known that beforehand!
