knocking from the front offside (rumbling noise)

ive just got back home after 17 days away and mrs monty collected the car after the gearbox rebuild, she had a concern about a knocking rumbling noise on the front offside, ive had the wheels balanced and tyres checked and all is ok.

theres a definet knock, and when going round a right hand bend it gives a strange rumbling knocking sound that i can feel under the floor of the car and through the steering, it doesnt happen when turning left.

i wonder it this has anything to do with having the gearbox refitted

More likely a worn CV joint.

Definitely sounds suspension related but. Has your car had the front diff modification done ? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Front diff been done on the recall, this has only appeared after the gearbox rebuild, how do you test the cv joints

Drive slowly on full lock in each direction.
You should get a distinct continuous knock on one side.

Been and tried lock to lock no knocking going left or right, the feeling on sweeping right corners is like a badly balanced tyre which gives a shake through the steering wheel and knocking on the floor under my feet

Be worth checking for a worn wheel bearing.
Jack the wheel off the ground about 30mm.
Grasp the wheel top and bottom and try and move the top and bottom of the wheel in and out.
Grasp the wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and try and move the sides the wheel in and out.
There should only be nominal slackness, if any at all.

well ive changed the arb drop links which seems to have removed a lot of the knocking, but the rumbling problem when turning right is still there, wonerdering if it may be a ball joint ?

time to take it to a garage me thinks

Monty1,

I have something similar but it is intermittent and almost feels as the car is touching the wheels. It only happens when turning right and not on full loock. It feels as though the car suddenly dtops at the front nearside corner.

I have had no clues or any signs in any other way.

I found my problem by moving the steering wheel quickly left and right whilst parked, it gave a clunking noise.

id advise changing the arb drop links, it makes such a difference to the cars handling and ride.

mrs monty commented on how much better it was Thumbs Up
