Helped a mate for a day who had his apart to change a piston - bend skirt, long story... Anyway, this engine is a work of art. The engineering is superb, and I was impressed that the bores looked like new after 260,000 KM. Also quite an easy engine to do major surgery on - apart from getting the sump off - that's a of a job...
Given that this engine has been in production in one form or another for almost 14 years shows that they got it right. There are some very high KM examples of these kicking about that are still running fine.
Pity BMW couldn't find a similarly bullet proof trannie to bolt to the back of it...
