Engine Braking...

Hi,

So I've now had the 4.4 for a few weeks and all going quite smoothly except for one nag. I have noticed that when I lift my foot off the accelerator at low speeds (but without stepping on the brake) the engine seems to brake and speed drops fairly quickly as if the car is braking itself and/or gears are downshifting early, rather than the car cruising and slowing down gently. there isn't exactly a lurch but there is a feeling of some sort if you're paying close attention.

Now I know this is a heavy beast but surely it shouldn't be slowing down that quickly on a flat road.

Is this normal for other 4.4 users or is this my first trip back to the dealers looming? i'm hoping i'm just overthinking this...

Also, is acceleration from low speed instantaneous or have people noticed a very small lag as the car builds up power?

On an unrelated note - the forum sticker got noticed and given a Thumbs Up today by a copper. MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

I had a similar problem with mine and it was a seized rear brake caliper, eventually resulting in a warped brake disk. After driving feel for excessive heat in any of the wheels, it should be quite obvious if any are warmer than the others.

Cheers,

I have a 61 plate 4.4 and I don't experience any undue slowing of the car under deceleration or lag in acceleration in fact just the opposite under acceleration it it as smooth and lively as anything I have ever driven given the size of the beast, so I would let the dealer have a look if i were you. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
I swear you will never see anything like this ever again....watch it..drink it in.

Thanks I have a feeling you may be right - both front wheels give off a lot of heat compared to the back, although no burning smell. Both these wheels were replaced and aligned so maybe dealer Censored it up. Will get it checked next week. Will it be ok to drive the odd short distance as I don't have another car to use?

I don't think it was T24RES - they were in a car and had followed me for a while to check car was insured and only mentioned it when I stopped at a light alongside. MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

I can only speak from my experience. It seems my brake caliper was seized for a number of weeks and a few hundred miles before it became chronic and warped the disk. You will know when the disks are warped when you feel the judder at almost any speed especially after braking. The Land Rover Approved Warranty covered the seized caliper but not replacing the warped disks and pads. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

Thanks. If it is the same issue, I'll try get it all replaced under the Warranty and if not, get the dealer who sold it to me 2 weeks ago to cover it as it isn't something I plan to, or should, take quietly.

Car's booked for Monday so let's see what happens. MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

Fantastic! Would be great to hear the outcome. If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

So just heard back from the dealer, apparently they can't hear any squealing noise when braking (and I must confess, the night before it was collected, it seemed to suddenly vanish!)

they have had a look at the brakes, and apparent from the rear discs being a little worn (change on next service), they can't see any problems and no seized calipers either. Weirdly enough, I noticed heat from the front wheels last week, but on my last few drives before it went, this also seemed to have gone away.

Any chance these could just be temporary symptoms from the brakes being glazed/cleaned by the dealer I bought it from a few weeks ago (and my FFRR just saying hello Twisted Evil)?

Got a Q137 "Assurance" treatment done as well - software updates, etc. MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

Has the original symptom of the sensation of braking when just coasting whilst driving disappeared? If you don't get stuck then you are not trying hard enough.

it was a little less on Sunday and on speaking to the service guy, he said they hadn't felt it at all. maybe this update/inspecting the brakes has cured it

should get the car back later this week and will see if i can still feel it MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"

greasing the brake discs should elimate any occurance of resistance between the brake pads and the disc.
make sure you use high-temperature grease.

Thanks Jim, but will this not affect the performance of the brakes - you need the resistance?

Think a replacement caliper or discs are likely Big Cry MY11 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 - "African Queen"
