Got back from a trip to Belfast last night and then had to go to work this morning.
Started the FF and got the "Check Coolant Level" warning on the dash, I was running late so thought it would be OK and I'll check it before heading home tonight.

I opened the header tank this evening and the thing was near empty so I topped it up with water and headed off to home. Got the same message on the way home so let it cool down a bit and had a look (in the dark) to see some brown coolant laying on the plastic under-tray on the drivers side.

I can't tell whether it's from the water pump, trans cooler, radiator or a split pipe somewhere. So I'm looking for pointers of where to start checking without having to remove too much stuff.

See, give her an gearbox oil & filter change, as spray with oil underneath and good long, and this is the thanks you get!!

I have had a few coolant loss issues with mine, biggest being water ump failure, and simplest being jubilee clip that needed nipping up.... 

Ya, it's hard to see much in the dark with a torch and I'm working 12 hours shifts for the next few days so it'll be Thursday before I can have a good look in daylight.

I'll just keep a water bottle in the car until then.  

I recently had to replace my expansion tank - hairline fracture which wasn't obvious at first. It's worth checking just to eliminate it from the list of possibles.

I'd say rad as first point of call

Remove two plastic pins on top rad shroud and look down the side of the rad
Any red residue is signs of slow leak very very common on the l322

It's a strange one this.
After the initial refill there's been no more coolant loss as all. I checked it this morning before going to work and it was fine. Checked it again at work and still no signs of any more loss, the header tank is still full, so I've no idea why it through out the coolant after the long run and then nothing.

I'm still going to take a closer look as I need to find out where it came from in the first place.

How long ago did you last check the coolant level before the recent warning ?

If you have taken the cap off you will have released all the pressure from the system that would have been forcing the coolant out. If its not leaking without being under pressure the leak I would guess it isn't the biggest of leaks. My money is on the rad if its never been changed. Get the fan off and remove the fan cowel and get a good look at it. New rads about £160 and easy to fit once you have the fan off.

Before we left Belfast for the return journey on Thursday night.
We drove into Belfast to catch the ferry to Cairnryan on Friday morning and then drove to Fort William, overnight there and then drove through Skye to catch the ferry to Harris and it's about an hour from Tarbert to home.

I didn't have any choice when I filled it at work but I'm going to get some antifreeze in there today.
The low coolant alarm hasn't returned yet though. 

It's the water pump.

I had chance to have a look in daylight and the main shaft and left hand side of the pump body (looking from the radiator) is damp and reddish in colour from the coolant. So new pump, gasket, o-ring and drive belts (thought I may as well change them while it's all in bits ) on order from Island 4x4 in Kent.

Thanks to Saint.V8 for the water pump tutorial in the Wiki section, that'll come in handy!!

I'll let you all know how it goes but it could be a week or so before I get round to it.
