Starter cranking time.

Until yesterday my 4.4 V8 petrol BMW unit has fired up instantly come rain or shine, but each time I start it now the cranking lasts about twice as long before the engine fires up. Engine runs normally otherwise. Has anyone else encountered this.

The battery is no more than 3 years old and the car only does about 5000 miles per year. After a journey today with the engine fully warm and battery charged I shut it down then started again with the same result. I will try another battery to see it makes a difference. Thanks Stan

if you can live with the slightly longer starting time and theres nothing else wrong with your range, then i would leave it as it is...but be prepared to possibly get one soon... ... - .- -.

When did it last have a set of spark plugs? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Very good point, I've had the car 4 years and done 25k miles probably time to change the plugs. The car had a new fuel filter recently but I don't suspect that to be relative given that it runs normally otherwise.

A cheap and relatively easy place to start.

New plugs and air filter and see how it goes. Might work and if it doesnt then it needed doing anyway...... There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Having not used the car for a few days I started it today and it is back to normal with each start. I rather suspect that what I thought was a fault was probably normal in the current weather conditions. I think the start sequence is affected by atmospheric conditions.
