i've had practice on a speed gun and i've been told that the speed is 'caught' by the gun but an officer has to physically stop you to give you a ticket...static speed cameras have the speed and a pic so the fine comes via the post.. ... - .- -.

For a hand held gun i would have thought that they would have a bike or car a bit further up the road.

Not so i am afraid but there are quite a few steps you can take that may result in you not being prosecuted, a good book is the Motorists survival handbook and I also have the website of a motoring solicitor who offers 3 letters that pretty much quash any speeding accusation if you are not pulled over. You also need to ask for the type approval of the gun, calibration certificates for the camera for that month, week and day, the dates of the officers training and whether he has had and attended the refresher courses he is obliged to. Also there has to be a history of X amount of accidents at that exact spot which is pretty inconvenient for them as they prefer nice straight bits of roads and accidents happen more on bends.
