Help a Newbie

Hi Gents,

I followed your advice and joined your ranks back in October, buying a 2004 facelifted TD6 Vogue to replace my written off X5.

And very, very happy I am with it too.

Over the last couple of weeks however as the temperature has dropped I've been getting the occaisional HDC Inactive on start-up (which then disappears and everythings fine), and as I only do a couple of miles a day I put this down to the aging battery and short distances. This morning whilst parking at the station after minus temperatures (and using heated screen, A/C, seats etc.) the 'suspension inactive' warning appeared and the lights turned off the centre console - however the car didnt drop or anything and drove fine.

I expect looking on this forum its because my battery is dying and doesnt have enough power (I also know it had a new compressor less than a year ago) and so I shall replace it this weeekend, however is does make me think its time to find out where my nearest specialist is.

Im based in Harrow (NW London) and although there is a LR in North Acton, does anyone know of any specialists / independants near me - I dont want to deal with the stealer every time theres an issue.

Thanks in advance for your help!

i think you are spot on re the battery..best place to purchase a replacement would be EuroCarParts, bosch type 020 is what you need and there are discount codes in the 'ebay and bargain spots' section.. ... - .- -.

Cheers Stan - I hope this solves it

I'm also trying to find out where my nearest specialist is in case it's something more serious or I have to get it reset after fixing the issue

Someone's just recommended Harris Mayes to me in Rickmansworth - anyone heard of them?

Peter Mayes of Harris Mayes Country Cars is an Ex Main Dealer and he really knows his stuff.

He has workshop at the back end of an industrial Estate and its not exactly neat and tidy but they do a good job.

I use them as well as Kings Langley Land Rover (Independent & similar prices) when I want a Land Rover Stamp in the book or use of Land Rover supplied equipment as they are part owned by Chipperfield Land Rover. (KLLR That is)

Cheers Gazellio - its booked in on Monday

However I've just got home and put a meter across the battery and its showing 12.1v - I gather from other posts that this is way down.

I've put it on charge - crossed fingers this may be the solution and I've got a Bosch battery on the way.

Just hope I dont have to have the suspension error reset, but I suppose they can do that at Harris Mayes for me

Was this with the engine running?
You should be seeing in the region of 14V across the battery with the engine running, so long as the charging circuit (alternator/rectifying diode etc) are all doing there job.

12.1V across the battery with ignition off is quite normal.
Had it, loved it!

battery charged (now at 12.67v) - didnt make any difference even after a reasonable drive..

The car is just slightly low on the drivers side front. However it drives fine and it isnt losing any height so I dont think any of the struts or hoses are leaking.

I expect it probably needs a new height sensor and a reset - Ive looked at the height sensor and there is no apparent issues.

oh well into Harris Mayes on Monday and local trips only up 'til then

@ Bienbn please update your car on your profile Wink

You might also want to check voltage with car running should be somewhere @ 14.5V .

updated

yeah I'm getting good charging voltage as well. I wonder if the low, low battery caused the issue and it needs resetting to sort it out.

It raised fine from Access height when I got in it this morning.

Ah, have the lights come back on on the centre console ? Are you still getting a "bong" and message of Air Suspension Inactive? If lights are on and no bong, the car could have recovered itself.

Lights off on centre console normally means hard fault and requiring a reset with diagnostics. .

Made no difference

I hoping as the car hasn't dropped at all and the compressor is only a year old that its not something too serious

Don't really want to pay out for a new compressor or struts
