What a nightmare!

Went for a walk round osmotherley in North Yorkshire today and we went back another way, without warning there was a very steep decline where water that had been running down had froze solid, my dad was in front in his car and couldn't go any further, ever with hill decent on I was sliding so had to run on to a verge to stop the rangey, then a jag came down and started sliding so he was stuck aswell, I had the kids and the dog, someone rang the local police to see if they could help but after 2 hours they hadn't turned up, eventually the guy with the jag called his son and he turned up with some salt and we mangaged to reverse back up the hill, one thing I noticed is when I tried reversing the rear wheels were spinning but the fronts wernt, is there a problem with drive to the front wheels or does this sound normal, would the hill decent of got me down if I had more bottle? Needless to say it was a pain in the arse and I needed a few pints afterwards!

Ice is icy, unless you have studs or chains, you are not much better off in a 4x4.

IIRC, there is a bias to the front wheels in normal driving mode, but you can compensate for this with the controls. (await flame Wink) .

To be fair I couldn't of tried anyway as my dads car was stranded further down the hill, I'd consider myself a competent off road driver but it did feel too bad to get down safely, when it was parked pointing down the hill the front wheels wouldn't spin when I was reversing, just the rears, it's going in to an Indy for something else next week so I'll get them to stick it on a ramp and make site there is drive going to the front wheels

In sussex at a place called the Devils Dyke there is a long hill very steep and isolated, in the 2011 snow we headed towards it, there were motorists who flagged us down and said it was impassable and they had abandoned their cars, we got to the top to find a car about halfway up but going backwards wheels spinning and only just avoided a crash when he got to the bottom, it was almost impossible to walk on, we selected HDC and got down it no problem at all. One day your life will flash before your eyes......................................make sure yours is worth watching!

I would have thought the traction control would have slowed the rear spinning wheels, and sent torque to the front.

You'd probably then spun all 4, unless DSC over-rode everything ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Does it sound like I have an issue with the 4wd though?

i dont think you have..your rears probably had no traction but the fronts did....if you had turned off the traction control i think you would had got going easier... ... - .- -.

.........so TC would have braked the rears and sent the torque to the fronts.

Which didn't happen.

I would have expected all 4 wheels to be spinning in the scenario you describe.

Not an expert here, but you might as well have been in a rear drive car from what you say.

My Disco 2 would not have done that. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I agree with you, or was it just the situation? What could cause no drive to the front wheels?

Centre diff not locking, but then again, I don't think the pre-05 cars have a locking centre anyway.....
