My rear tyres are only lasting 4-5k miles Why? I have gone through 2 sets of Kumos in the last 9 months. Is it the tyre or something wrong with the bushes or set up?

how have they worn?...on the edges, evenly straight across?

My rear tyres are wearing quicker on the outside edges - I've got Toyo's on and they have done about 10000 miles, still plenty tread on the middle but the outer edges are noticibly worn.

I've had a four wheel alignment carried out, the camber was slightly out but tracking OK.

As for the Kumhos, they are a soft compound but 4 or 5k miles sounds poor. I am at 30k on Pirelli Scorpion Zeros and they have about 3mm left all round.

Michelin Diamaris have excellent wear rates but you pay a premium for them. I also don't like the harder compounds in winter so I tend to stick with the Scorpion M&S ones.

Bushes and setup........ Should get between 25K and 40K out of tyres depending on tyre and your driving style... I have a 19yr old customer who drives his TD6 like he stole it everywhere, and still gets 20K plus out of his tyres... My last set of Toyo's i removed with 3.5mm of tread left after covering 34,000 miles and only removed them as they were perishing...

That said i have had customers with rear bushes out running rear tyres out in 6K...

Thanks for the replies - I know that the alignment is OK and tyre pressures are also OK so I'm guessing that the rear bushes may have some wear in them.

As I said, the rears have done about 10k miles and the outside edge is obviously more worn - it's the first set of Toyo's I've had but I'd expect them to last longer - I know the Contis have wear issues on the shoulders, but no hard evidence on the Toyos.

I think I'll change the rear bushes and get a 4 wheel alignment - any ideas on the cost of doing the bushes (top and bottom) ?

I have the same car as you and run Michelins, they only last me 10,00 miles. Had all the bushes done trying to find a bloody knock so it's not that & it's had all the wheels aligned. Range Rover 4.4 V8 Vogue

If its just rears, it could be related to towing? I've had a noticeable difference (increase) in wear rate when I've had periods with lots of towing....but went over 30k on Rodians of all things with just the car. Mike - MPx

I have the same problem, wear on outer edges that is. It's not tyres as had same issue with Nexen Roadians, Grabber ATs and Pirelli Scorpions. Must be bushes/alignment. This is on my to do list

Not sure why much quicker even wear on the rears would occur, though. Something to do with power transfer ratios between front and rear ? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

Interesting to hear that others have the same issue with outside wear on the rear tyres........as I said, mine have done about 10k and the outer edges are almost shot - near side slightly worse than the off side which you would expect from roundabouts etc.

I've just gone to view a 22,000 mile car which showed a lot of wear on the outer edge of the front tires, lot more on the nearside and generally more than the centre parts. The car was also pulling slightly to the left when I drove it. The dealer is prepping the car now and I'll ask them to take a look at both alignment and front bushes. Will let you know if they report anything back.

However rear tires seemed to be in reasonable condition.

Anything else that could be causing this that I could ask them.to look at?

When I got my car the outer edges of the Toyo's were showing a lot more wear than the, centre / inner edges
They were fitted to the front but not sure if they had been swapped as it had two new Roadians on the rear.
In the end I removed them all and fitted Scorpions, at the same time I had the tracking and alignment checked. It was as it should be. I noticed the shoulders of the Scorpions seem much more substantial than the two brands I removed.
Overall I'm pleased with the Scorpions. When it's time to replace I will be buying hem again.
