Damn blumming gearbox

Today I got the FFRR back, finally after 2 weeks.

It runs very very smooth now with the new fuel pump and filter, cleaned injectors, fuel line and intake manifold. So no issues there.

The front struts with new airbags are installed, new front discs and pads, new front wheel bearings, new ABS sensors and new bushing on the lower suspension arms (also front).

However my main issue with the 3-4 gear shift has not changed AT ALL !! So back to square one, what is going on there ??????? Looking at re-flashing the transmission ECU. Has anyone heard anything of a service where I can send it have it reflashed and get it back as I am a bit apprehensive using the Faultmate. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Certainly worth getting the latest software update for the Mechatronic unit. If the problem still persists I would suspect the delay accumulator piston.

Hi Phil, thanks for the advice. Will first do the software update (Blackbox seems to have the latest update) and see if that resolves the issues.

Is replacing the delay accumulator piston a major job or is it one of the "shallower" components ?

I remember on the old gearbox of my Chevy Astrovan (that was driving on syrup iso ATF by the time I got it) just cleaning the "speed control"? valve (was sitting at the tail of the box and could be removed very easily) helped the box. I did have to flush it with diesel a few times and then replace the ATF and filters a few times before it was in perfect nick again.

For info, my ZF had the filter and 7 liter of Lifeguard changed out at 70,000 km in the first attempt to fix the problems. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

To put things in perspective. the tiptronic shifts are silky smooth, it is only the full automatic that struggles with the 3-4 shift. The error code says something along the lines of algorithm based problem. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Decode the synthetic algorithm using Google Maps (Africa) then splice the torsion nipple into the ECU re-set function and then.... change the oil again.

Should be fine Thumbs Up

There you go just what I said to do.....

On a serious note how on earth does all that work mechanically and report whats its doing/done electronically to the ECU at the same time... Shocked Big Cry

Lots of juju magic around my gearbox I guess Wink

Thanks Phil for the info.

I will first get the ECU update done and see if that resolves the issue. Since it does not display the issues in tiptronic mode, i.e. shifts very smoothly in any gear change, I am hoping that it is something in the programming that hasn't had enough "adaptability" programmed in. Also I have found other mentions on the net related to this issue being resolved by the ECU software update.

Wish I could find an outfit that could do the update directly on the ECU as I don't trust my Faultmate ;( MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I agree that an ECU software update is definitely the way to go. If components wear, or friction characteristics change, differently to the way ZF expected then they can compensate for this in the updated software.

Not sure how you propose doing an update with the Faultmate though. Do you have access to a more recent version of the ECU software? Obviously the Faultmate will let you take a copy of your existing code and then copy it back again but any new code will be Land Rover copyright so I assume that BBS won’t be able to supply it.

Hi Phil, BBS actually does have some form of agreement with LR to use their software for ECU updates. That is why I can do a software update to the latest available LR ECU software.

My "concern" is that my Faultmate is not working flawlessly, it sometimes does not "talk" to the car properly. It has been back to BBS recently and some of the problems are gone but not all. So there is my main concern: that the re-flash causes corruption in the ECU software.

My fall back could be to go to the main dealer in Lagos but I have some concerns after hearing many horror stories about the quality and practices of car mechanics here. That is why I have the Faultmate in the first place and all the work on my car I either do myself or have it done by our mechanics (who didn't tighten the front wheels after their work last Saturday, luckily I know the signs so it was resolved in time).

I have been looking around for a service (like the TD6 Ecotuning thread has found) where I can send the ECU (I am going on a 4 week leave soon) have it updated and then back but I can't find anywhere unfortunately.

So I just have to brave it and do the update myself. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
