I washed the car and it is literally Spattered all over with thick tar spots, must be from all the damned pot hole repairs been done locally, I think they're too big for even a clay bar to take off, will need to get some tar remover from Halfords first I think. I was going to clay the car anyway, now I have an excuse.

Its stuck on both sides of mudflaps, in the wheelarches,a ll over the painted surface, glass. Its the worst I've ever seen on a car! Discovery 4 HSE

Cant remember if you did this last time, but will you be doing your "How to Guide" with Pics of your claybar session? Idiots guide style would be great inc materials used and time taken etc!

You may have done this last time when you did your TD6. I remember the before / after pics but cant remember if you did one of your guides like you have done for other jobs - Fitting side vents was one if i recall.

Sorry if sounds cheeky to other members but knowing Adam, i know he gets pleasure from Claying his car etc.

When I do get time to get around to it (new Pup seems to mean less time to spend detailing the car) I shall take some more photos of doing the actual work, it is very easy. The key is to keep lubricating the paint so the clay doesn't stick or grab. It won't 'feel' like the clay is doing anything but it really is!

I think I will use the AutoGlym Tar Remover (tried Turtle Wax in the past and not impressed at all), then do the clay bar.

Doing the rear and front screens is a real eye opener, really cleans the glass well. Discovery 4 HSE

White spirit seems to work well, or failing that petrol on the worst tar spots.

I haven't used a clay bar yet ("Bilt Hamber Soft Clay" seemed to win the reviews) - maybe in the summer.

But I have been very pleased following your advice with the 2 bucket wash + resin polish + Turtle Wax platinum extra gloss wax.

Yes I suppose petrol is always a good substitute, albeit expensive and dangerous to use while smoking (not that I smoke!)

Have long needed a tar remover and the turtle wax one I tried was rubbish. I have more faith in Autoglym products. Discovery 4 HSE

clay bar, nah far too expensive, try red diesel or if you are feeling flush WD40 not illegal to use on it, just don't what ever you do put it in it otherwise the FFRR may end up being crushed

AutoGlym Intensive Tar Remover

I've been claying and pc'ing the RR a Panel per day so I can spend an hour or two and fully de-swirl.

Found lots of tar spots recently despite claying the car not long ago.

I've put it down to the pot hole repairs too. TDV8 HST Sport **Current**

A couple of coats of decent wax after polishing is a must. Especially after using SRP (Autogym Super Resin Polish) as it cuts the paintwork quite severely, thats why it works so well.

The wax should then stop the tar amongst other things from adhering to the paintwork or they should be easily removed when washed.

For those non detailing freaks, a Polish is a fine abrasive and it rubs the top layer off - paint oxidisation (makes paint dull) and swirl marks inflicted from washing with a sponge rather than wash mit.

A Wax is a protective coat that seals the paintwork after a polish. If you wax without polishing you seal in impurities and make the paint worse, if you don't wax after polishing then your paint has no protection and will oxidise twice as fast and impurities will weld themselves to the paint.
