How old is the battery?

If you take the car to Halfords they will do a free test to check the state of the battery.

As Winter is fast approacjing I would be inclined to replace the battery if it is more than a couple of years old.

Euro Car Parts are doing 15% off batteries at the moment.

The gear selector light should go out after about 15 mins - if it doesn't, check that the cap is closed on the OBDC port.

Just bought a 2003 4.4 V8 Vogue myself with a Land Rover-original battery. I came from a Disco II via an X5 to the ffrr.

I noted the typical problems of a weak battery: not even being able to start the engine. As with the X5 earlier this year, I immediately replaced the battery by a Varta H03 (100 Ahrs) model. No more problems since.

Indeed, as said earlier, if your battery plays up, better replace it, as the costs are in no relation to the potential trouble and reduced dependability of the car.

I'm using my RR for a long trip next week and the car will be parked up for a week or so as I travel offshore for work. As such I didn't want to get stranded with a flat battery so decided to check for parasitic drains today. It's pretty straight forward to do, in a nutshell here's how to go about it :-

Using a multi meter rated and fused to measure DC Ampers, remove battery's earth and connect the meter leads in series (one end of the meter on the battery terminal, the other on the - lead)

NB ignition should be off or at least on the very first turn, failure to do this will allow too much current to pass through the multi meter resulting in at best a blown fuse.

I then managed to leave my multi meter on the windscreen and close the bonnet.

With the ignition on the first turn and nothing major being used the car was using 8.56 Amps

With the ignition off and car locked the car was using 0.54 Amps (enough to drain a battery over time)

However my ECU was still running and my P indicator was illuminated

20 mins later, P was no longer illuminated and car was using 0.073 Amps = perfect no parasitic drain.

Interestingly enough though if I attempted to open the boot by pressing the handle, my ECU & P light kick back into life, must be the imobiliser kicking in.

Hope this makes sense?
