Many people assume RR Diesel is the only way to go without really doing the calculations:

Assuming 12000 miles a year mixed driving with mainly longish trips:

Petrol AJV8 @ 20mpg (1.30pl) £3600 per annum

Diesel TDV8 @ 25mpg (1.39pl) £3120 per annum

Difference 480 pa annum

Dealer price of 2006/56 Range Rover Vogue SE V8 Petrol with 47000 miles £20000 (maybe less)

Dealer price of 2006/56 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Diesel with 47000 miles £24000

24000 - 20000 = 4000 / 480 = 8.33 years

8.33 years of ownership before it's cheaper to buy the identical used Diesel. The Petrol car is more powerful and much smoother to drive. No diesel puddles when filling up either.

PS: And yes 20mpg in a AJV8 is very achievable I have using one daily for a month and have 22.4mpg with quite a few long 80mph trip included. And my wife seems capable of 22mpg in the TDV8....

You're right mate, when choosing diesel or petrol you should do the numbers first. Also include maintenance cost although I think these days petrol (with the long lasting spark plugs) and diesel don't have a big difference in cost. I usually do these calcs before I buy a car and then still buy the car I like most despite the numbers  MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I am going to run the Petrol for the near future as I just love the Petrol V8 experience (Great sound, power plus super smooth with No torsional vibration) and as stated above if buying used its cheaper for 8 years and who keeps a car 8 years....

I never understand why people spend many more thousands on a car just to get one that is more economical to run, as the difference buys a lot of fuel.

Well two years and £3.5K in autobox repairs, asuming the petrol autobox is stronger/better, I'd have been better off with a petrol...

And those that have only ever driven an oil burning TD Range Rover should really give the super smooth and powerful Petrol a try - you will be pleasantly surprised.

I did the same calcs when I bought an SC. Unfortunately the SC sounds too much fun with the throttle fun on, so I'm probably not living up to my calcs.

I must say, Gaz, I'm beginning to think along these lines.
After selling my 2006 MY FF Td6 earlier this year, my mileage has reduced considerably. I am looking to buy, and will only consider a post facelift car.
Now from what I read, the Jag engine is more efficient than the BMW lump ?
My budget dictates either a Td6 (like the one I had ) or the NA jag engine.
There's not many of these petrols about, but they're a damn sight cheaper than the diesel . . . .

Get the rare but cheap normally aspirated 305BHP AJV8 I actually prefer it to the Supercharged version but thats also an amazing engine. I like low down V8 Grunt combined with ULTRA smoothness
