Steering Question

Hi All,

Finally got everything working great on my FF but then this weekend I get a judder through the steering wheel when reversing in the drive - i reverse straight back then make a 90 degree turn into my drive. I've tried looking via search but can't find anything at the moment - any ideas? Thanks Smile FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

Doesn't look like anyone knows anything, at least not today Britishlion!

I did read somewhere that there is a valve on the power steering rack that regulates the oil flow - these can go faulty and I guess then it's a new steering rack! Oh happy days....... Big Cry

This is now definately the most unreliable car I have ever owned, I've just replaced the air compressor and the rear windscreen wiper motor too, anyone know how much i'm going to need to remorgage to buy a new steering rack?! Shocked

Having said all that I washed and waxed her today (!) and I still love her to bits Mr. Green FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

you might be thinking of the servotronic valve which regulates the pressure of the steering fluid..the most common sympton of this valves failure is heavy steering when de-accelarating because the faulty valve can't keep up with change in speed..it might be your problem and is very easy to change...do a search for more info.. ... - .- -.

Thanks Stan,

Quick question on the search page - when I put in 'steering' I get lots of topics but none specific to steering issues? Any tips on how to use search properly? Sorry for the daft question Embarassed FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

the best way I have found is to encompass the word/sentance with double quotation marks, ie "steering" ..this fococuses the search.. ... - .- -.

Remaining fococused (Wink)

Does the judder start as soon as you start reversing, or when you start making the 90 degree turn?

Does it judder when you reverse in other situations as well?

Also, are you sure it is steering and not gearbox (sorry to be harbinger of doom) ? .

Thanks Stan and Joe!

The judder only happens when you go from stationary and turn in tight spaces such as supermarket car parks, my drive etc. It does it in reverse and can do when going forwards, especially going over a bump in the road or drop kerb etc. It does it more when the car is stationary and you turn the wheels (although I always try to let the car creep along a little when turning the wheel full of nearly full lock so as not to over burden the power steering)

I'm pretty sure it's not the gearbox (careful Joe, I nearly pooped hahaha) Shocked That seems to be going fine!!

Any additions British lion? Could do with your input here m8! Thumbs Up FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

pedro, try revving the engine [out of gear] before you manoeuvre to get the steering fluid circulating properly, then try reversing/turning..if at this point you dont get the judder then its the servotronic valve, if indeed you do still get the judder then its something else.. ... - .- -.

Do you get a sense of which side of the car it is coming from or is it general?

If it helps, my FFRR always gives out some vibration from the right front (OSR) at a particular junction (brake hard down a hill then turn acutely right at the junction), and I get a little whining noise when on full lock (to the right). Other than that steering fine, so am waiting for it to go bang or fail MOT.

"very easy to change" for servotronic valve was not the case for a few people on here, sheared bolts, difficult access, but this does seem to be the most likely cause. .

Thank again Guys Thumbs Up

I'll try reving the engine when I go to work (boy am i running late!) Stan - thanks for that.

Joe - no it feels in general, no L or R bias. Mine makes that whining noise on full lock too! (either full lock L or R) - I guess it's worth trying the valve at £60 (thanks Stan) hope I don't get the rusted/sheared bolt nightmare that others got!

By the way do you know how much an exchange/new steering rack is? (I'm sitting down!)

Cheers Thumbs Up FFRR Vogue 2003 4.4V8 - Epsom Green & Ivory

Stratstones quoted me £1800 for a new steering rack ! Turned out the fault had nothing to do with the rack, just a bolt that could have been tighter on a suspension arm. Previously..

My '02 also does this and has been for some time.

From reading the responses here and in a search, it does appear to be the valve, but as the rest of the steering seems to be fine other than when parking (and intermittent - I think only when under heavy load), it doesn't unduly concern me and can wait until the next service, I hope. Si. <This is my name.
