My Bluefin arrived this morning, so I thought I'd get it done before I headed for the train to London.

The instruction booklet says there are 2 methods, the first being a dowload straight from the unit itself, and the other which requires an offload of the running map, which is then sent to Superchips to produce a "custom" map. Unfortunately mine was the latter, and by the time I had gotten the mail from them to say it was available for download, I was on my way.

Has anyone else had to do it this was, and is the map really "custom", as it only seemed to take less than an hour for it to be available?

it doesn't take the tuners long to play with the parameters

The reason manufacturers don't make them like is is that it needs to be the right combo of performance, fuel consumption and durability of parts eg brakes, etc. It's always a balance.

I know a specialist tuner who can do a remap for £350 so I'm thinking of avoiding the DIY option if its for the same money and he will know all the pit falls.

As a matter of interest however what exactly is involved? Is a chip physically inserted into the car or is a machine plugged in and the electronics reconfigured? I'm interested to know how they do it. 2009 Vogue TDV8 Nara Bronze

It would a good idea to spend a little extra and go to JE Engineering.....

They plug a device in.
Read the current software settings.
Save the current software settings to a file.
Then edit a copy of this as they see best to improve the car.
They then save this new file to the car.
They then test it and see if anything is wrong and correct it, ie flat spots, spikes...

Some of the earlier posts about the poor running after mapping could also be due to a modified map having been used with out of date base software. That is why good tuners will take a look at the original software and work out where best to go with the new map. Most tuning equipment will log the software and the hardware coding to help do this.

So it is worth putting the latest software on both the Powertrain and Transmission. Another thing worth doing is to reset the engine adaptions and also the gearbox adaptions just before mapping just so things are neutral when the modified map is used first of all.

Mapping is best done by someone with a very solid background in the subject, not just some bloke with a laptop of generic maps.
