I have had that issue forever but I blame it on bad quality petrol here. If you go through my older posts I did about everything you can to resolve it.

I have done a few 2012 conversions on BMW 4,4 petrol FF's and replaced the air filter boxes with K&N's etc without any faults like you have described... |

Does seem odd that the light suddenly came on. Especially as the filter has been on the vehicle for a few months and nothing before.

Note that mine has been running on the K&N forever and it has not made any difference. The light came on before (with the overly full paper filter) and after K&N installation and it kept going on and off depending on where I got my petrol from.

Get a Wi-fi OBD reader from Amazon (about £20) and a copy of Rev, Dashcommand or Torque for your smartphone (if you have one?). You'll be able to check long term fuel trims and error codes for less than £50.

Seems odd that you're having problems on different banks at different times.
