Plenty refrigerant but no cold aircon: EDITED - and no heat!

The aircon in our Rangie's, well, gash. Has been since we bought it, so I bought a regassing kit off the bay of E with the intention of doing the TT with any leftover gas. Just been out to it and there's plenty refrigerant in there, the compressor's going as well, so what am I missing? 2003 Vogue TD6/1992 Classic 300TDi/2x 1991 Golf GTI/1966 Volkswagen Kombi/2x 1968 Volkswagen Kombi/Probably something I've forgotten...

How do you know there's refrigerant in there?
There's two pipes on the left in the engine bay, both have high pressure valve/nozzle type things on them, iirc one is slightly larger than the other one, one pipe goes to the condenser and the other away hence when the air con is on (and working correctly) one f the pipes goes very cold and the other appears much warmer to the touch - is this the case with you? I had one of those mobile guys come and re-gas mine , only cost me Ł49 and have seen cheaper if you take it into some garages, maybe worth taking it to one of these guys to see if the pressures ok/leaks etc 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

Does the regas kit have a gauge on it that shows the system pressure?
It's been a while since I played with the aircon but I remember that you can overfull the system and that will stop it from working correctly. Also a compressor fault can also be the cause.

The only way to find out how much refrigerant is in an ac system is to evacuate it and weigh it. You can't determine the quantity by measuring pressure in the system.
The diy regas kits are a liability, as Budgie says you can easily overfill the system with quite expensive consequences.
The best solution is to have the present gas and oil evacuated and then the system refilled with the correct charge of each after checking the system will hold a vacuum.
Once you know the system is gassed correctly you can then try it for correct operation.

Seems it's probably not an aircon issue at all. Plenty refrigerant in both sides - yeah, checked with a gauge - and checking the temperatures from the vents with my hand-held IR temp gauge sees to real variation in temperature from 16 to whatever the max is on the dial... So it's a control issue which is a bit of a Censored . So, first things first, are there any simple checks I can perform? I can get all the fan speeds and the umpteen buttons to control the airflow work, so what's likely to be wrong? 2003 Vogue TD6/1992 Classic 300TDi/2x 1991 Golf GTI/1966 Volkswagen Kombi/2x 1968 Volkswagen Kombi/Probably something I've forgotten...

Isn't there a temp sensor/thermostat type thing in the centre console near the heater controls ? Wouldn't have the foggiest how the to test it though! Looks like a little black vent ? 2003 Vogue 4.4 V8 Java Black

The best idea would be to connect it to a diagnostic unit to search for the fault.
You could end up chasing your tail and spending on bits that didn't need replacing otherwise.

Since you have no heat and no cold, it sounds like the flaps directing the air flow may be the issue.

If you can get hold of a workshop manual/RAVE and look at which valve/flap does what, maybe that can help you look around for one that could cause this issue.

Then go and operate the valve/flap by hand and see if it is the actuator that is at fault, or whether it is vacuum/lead related.

You can also check the vacuum hose system controlling some of the valves, just pull one off with running engine and see if it "sucks". MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

i had this issue in an old rangie i used to have (02 plate) and i seem to remember it was actually a resistor that was shot which controls the temp.... was a little part but still cost a Ł200 to fix i think

Still reckon you may need to get your aircon checked out though. Asking for heat in this weather may not give you any. I was out last night at 22:30 and aircon was still blasting away at 22 degrees setting .
