The cooling fan is VERY LOUD ... until ...

When I start the car in the morning and drive off, the radiator fan is quite loud. It stays loud forever, or so it seems. The fan howl is noisier than any other facet of driving. It does not seem normal to me, but then I don't know the L322 Td6 well.

At one point I waited until the motor was fully warm, then deliberately ran RPMs up to 4k, and suddenly the fan noise stopped. Afterward, the fan noise stayed low. I only tried this once. Perhaps I should try it again.

I'm starting to wonder if the thermal clutch on the fan drive is faulty. In normal operation, I think it should be loose when the motor is cool, so the fan does not get driven much. Then when the radiator and coolant start to heat up, the fan clutch should start closing, so the fan turns more, thus cooling things down.

Am I right, or am I right? Confused Reno, on assignment in France.

Occasionally, on start up in the morning, my fan is noisy, not every day, it soon dies off. Not tested to see if it is temperature, weather, usage (did I use the car the day before), but for some reason it does it every now and then. I am not bothered, neighbours should be up by the time I leave anyway Smile .

Joe's fan is only occasionally noisy because he lives in cold, rainy England. Here in the Alsace it can happen nearly all the time in summer.

Rolling with laughter
