Galaxy Tab or New IPAD ?

OK, having finally decided to ditch the (not so) smart phone, mainly due to the persistent inability to perform their primary function, i.e. make telephone calls.

Anyway, bought a Nokia phone handset for phone calls. Happy days, it works. That leaves me with a decision regarding a tablet for email and document reading on the move.

So which do I go for then? I thought the decision would be easy since I love Android as an OS and I generally find Apple stuff to be hateful things. Until I spoke to a colleague that was. Big Cry

Anyway, the Apple screen is nicer allegedly and there's scant difference in price (surprising) but what I can't find out are things like data tethering. I need to be able to use the device as a hotspot and I need to be able to use it on Vodafone (Company supplied data SIM card).

Opinions please Gentlemen.

TIA

Dom.

Ipad definitely. Apple products are for those who want the best, and don't want to waste their time trying to figure out how to use it, or make it work.

I think a lot of us on the forum have converted to Apple over the past couple of years. In my experience the main people who knock Apple products haven't really tried them. I used to criticise them out of ignorance myself, until one day I'd just had enough of trying to make my pc laptop work, and tried a Mac, never looked back!

Sorry war and peace on the pc vs mac debate when you just wanted to know about the Ipad! Short answer = Ipad! Range Rover-less at the moment - Pining!

Guess you typed that on your Android , as the word is "Freaks" and not 'freeks" Laughing

Anyhow i have two iPad 3's and basically they are s hit e , but then some say the Androids are the same …

Have to be honest and say i don't use the iPad to it's capabilities tho , just use it for the forum at night and the odd game …..

I'm not an Apple fan at all - I think that the last decent thing they made was the old iPod with the scroll wheel - it's all been downhill from there....I know countless people that spend hours every month in the Apple store getting things fixed/replaced!

The iPad is almost there but still has pros and cons and is very expensive for what you get. Galaxy Tab or Asus Transformer Prime are good Android competitors

I bought a Sony tablet S recently and have been very happy with it. Not sure about tethering as mine is WiFi only, but the built in IR remote system means i got a touchscreen universal remote that works my whole living room HTPC, audio and video setup and a decent tablet for less than £300!

i use an iPad, nice and ideal for keeping me entertained with sky go, etc. whilst away on business and then for view/editing documents for work.
also great to use with my apple TV unit and stream whatever i want from home to view wherever i am, i can even log in to me home pc and operate it from wherever i am.
not sure what the opposition can do but the iPad does what i need and that's all that matters

Android is much more versatile than Apple due to the open platform and that is what attracts me, plus the openness that Apple misses. I also don't like the "must have" craze that Apple seems to generate.

I love the Galaxy S, haven't bought a tablet yet but it will definitely be a Galaxy Tab. The android operating system is very nice to work with. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

I was never really an apple fan, and could not see the attraction, until I bought one.... It just works. I use it for just about everything now. I have apple tv in the house now and it is great. I can select programmes/video/music on the iPad and watch it on the telly. For the formula 1 I have sky go running and can watch in car video, track position etc, live, as the race is on, and the main race is on the telly.... Yes android will probably do all that as well... But the apple is all plug and play with no set up.. I love it. (no flash is a pain in the erse on some websites tho') Previously..

What about one of those hp tablets with android put on it??

I've use both for phones and they both have upsides an downsides.

Apple for ease of use.
Android for price/easier to put jacked software on

iPad no contest.

If you want to have nth level control over the device then feel free to frustrate yourself with an android device, the possibilities are equally cancelled by the limitations of software designed to work on multiple devices/configurations of device. Apple's walled garden approach is far from perfect but at least delivers a more consistent user experience with (allegedly) improved security. I certainly have not had any issues with security with the multiple IOS devices we have in the house.

If you need to know and control how a device works in respect to all the tasks then buy android (or jailbreak IOS), however if you want to use something and know that it will 'just work' without having to worry about anything else then the choice is simple.

At the end of the day it is your money/time/energy and your choice. All are good but with some limitations. Only you can decide which is the compromise worth making.

Simon Thumbs Up

I read my e-mail OK on my iPhone but I have an Ipad2 next to the control centre in the front room (my seat) just to google stuff I see on telly so's I don't have to move my lard arse upstairs to a computer, Internet on a phone, any phone, seems to be hard work.

Any tablet would do for that and I guess any phone would, its just I was given both so I put my two HTC gadgets on e-bay, I don't actually think they were any better or worse. Got to say that lack of Flash on Apple stuff is a pain but getting less so.

So I know people enjoy abusing Apple, and why not, but it seems fine to me. Very Happy Geoff

You mention Vodaphone. And an iPad works very well on Vodaphone from recent experience with a friend's device.

You mention using it as a hotspot. I know my iPhone can be used as one, so I guess an iPad can be as well.

I'm a recent Apple convert and wouldn't touch anything else now. First chance I get, my PC's going in the bin.

I've become what another (android fan) friend terms as an 'Apple sheep'. Baaa!!!!!!! And a very happy 'Baaaaaa!!' at that! Si. <This is my name.
