Holidays in Italy...

Where is good and all importantly cheap to holiday in Italy?? Maybe one of those all inclusive type holidays and I think flights will be needed as well as I won't be driving the ff all the way there and back lol

Thinking somewhere with sights to see where transport and night life is good??

And this wont be a family holiday, the ex is going mental about kid stuff at the minute so not even worth considering Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Depends on what sort of sights KP. We love lake Maggiore which is nice and quiet, decent restaurants, proper leather handbaggy type shops, walking, beering and generally nice.

If you want a bit more nightlife and less pipe & slippers then Lake Garda is more lively.

Some people rave about Tuscany but having been twice, (only went the second time to make sure) I found the place to be a complete Censored . Expensive too, try 11 euros for a beer at a pavement café in Pisa.

Dom.

Hey KP,

I love Italy. For transport most of the major cities have decent rail links but taxis can be expensive.

Night life if you're loaded then the lakes, Roma or Milano if not hmmm bearing in mind a pint of Heinekin can easily be €9 in some of these waterfront places.

That said you can party quite well in Firenze (Florence) there are some great bars including great one in the square by the duomo (Cathedral) which is Irish/Canadian and always pretty lively.

The clubs are quite dear tho.

If you like sights there is no better city on Earth than Roma.

Milan is overrated and centres around about 4 nice areas which are all mega expensive. (my company is based there)

For a chill and sun bathe Sorrento is awesome but stay clear off Napoli gyppos thieves and general tramps.

Given you are likely flying I'd ditch places like Puglia as beautiful as they are they are a pig to get to! Probably also swerve Venezia (Venice) as it's a bit "coupley" and water taxis can take advantage. Also Bolognia was close to a massive earthquake recently!

Sorry there was not a lot of really useful stuff there! Also need to learn to talk whilst waving hands about!

One more point, IME the Italians are really cool if you try some phrases and will often help you with pronunciation! (depending how indecipherable your Yorkie is Laughing Thumbs Up ) ye'll be reet
Also remember Grazie is pronounced "grat-see yay"
Grab a phrase book it's a pretty easy language.

Buona vacanza. Ciao ciao! Thumbs Up

If Venice isn't too pricey that may be worth it Wink

Venice is great, and affordable, if you book direct.

You can fly from a local airport on one of these budget airlines into somewhere reasonably local to Venice (forgive me, but I forget the name of the airport we used, but it was about an hour's drive away) and then get a cheap bus ticket direct. Venice airport will be far more expensive.

We booked into a lovely local hotel just inside Venice and asked them where they'd recommend we eat. We avoided a lot of the more touristy places and ate very fine food at the ones frequented by the locals. OK, so there's little (if any) English translation, but this was rarely an issue. And it was a lot cheaper and more in-keeping with the place.

And we just walked. Every street in Venice is lovely, so just amble around and absorb the place. You won't ever be bored.

I love the cafe culture there. Buy a newspaper and sit outside with an espresso, chat to your companion, and watch the world go by.

Oh, and dress smartly, but casually. Si. <This is my name.

I Have a friend who has a flat overlooking Lake Como. I went a couple of years ago to see The Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este http://www.concorsodeleganzavilladeste.com/en/

With regards to food, do what I used to do when I worked there (and didn't speak any Italian yet). Just go down the menu to something you haven't tried before, Italian food is gorgeous. Try Risotto Nero if you get a chance Wink MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

A quick nose around seems to show plenty of holidays in Venice being the long city break type which at £250 a pop for 3/4* and including flights, B&B seems to be a good deal to me really Smile

Well my mums Italian so I have been quite a few times as I have family over there. Although I don't always go to stay with them or visit.

I would suggest if you want to be a bit different, go down south, it's not as touristy and is cheaper generally, especially if you go when it's not local holiday time. E.g. How do you fancy the idea of having a whole beach to yourself, I mean literally to yourself! Something I have experienced on a number of occasions.

Southern Italy has some wonderful places to visit. if you go out of season you can get some amazing deals. Get yourself a hire car and just drive around and stop where it takes your fancy. Many hotels will be half empty off season, do a bit of bargaining and get a great deal.

Another tip. Many towns in Italy have a special saints day (or week), if you go then you will find them having a carnival with lots of fireworks etc. No longer FF owner but still interested. Present car Jaguar XE

Well after talking to family that have toured Europe Venice is out. £100 for a short gondola ride!!! Flip me :O

On the plus side it does mean we may go to Roma and then south for a bit being limited to peak seasons as it were Smile

Then it was recommended to other the alps for skiing and head to Bulgaria Smile so another bargain holiday in the mix. Too many places to go as never enough time to see them!! FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
