I am looking to change to a FFRR Vogue from an E46 M3 which I have for the last 4 years. I know the FFRR is not going to be as fun, probably cost the same to run if not more, I dont need an large vehicle and only do local town driving....BUT just want a vogue. |

I have a 4.4 V8 on LPG. Not something I'll rush into changing, but certainly getting itchy feet. I do look at the car and think to myself how nice it looks, but its getting to the point its just not really me.

The thing is this: The Range Rover is a large, complex car. If you want to drive, day in and day out without ever looking under the bonnet or checking the tyre pressures etc, this is not the car for you, because it will cost a lot to keep on the road. However, if you look after the car, check it over occasionally and generally keep an eye on things, it's a reliable and cheap to run car in comparison to many. Buying them once the major depreciation hit has been taken by a previous owner is sensible. And most parts for them are very cheap and most work on them is simple mechanic-ing. The OP in this thread failed the MOT for something that (IMHO) was bloody stupid of him to have missed. You know that brakes are important in a car going the best part of three tonnes - so why not look at the pads and discs occasionally - you can pretty much see all you need to without even taking off a wheel. Most of the "stupid things that go wrong and shouldn't" are simple to fix - and won't go wrong in the first place quite often. It makes me a bit cross when people use the MOT as a replacement for common sense, then get upset that the car fails because they have failed to keep it up to scratch for the previous 12 months. When I rule the world, anyone driving to an MOT with a car that fails will be prosecuted for failing to maintain in a roadworthy condition. And then shot in the face. |

The biggest problem I find with owners of FFRrs is they seem to think that when something does go wrong (i.e. a tell tale warning light on the instrument cluster) they think it's ok to drive it another 6 weeks before getting round to having the fault diagnosed and repaired, a bit like chopping your arm off and hoping you don't bleed to death while you go about your everyday business...

The failed MOT was only a small part of my annoyance, it was the combination of the fact that they could accurately measure the rear pad thickness but not the disk thickness without taking the wheel off, the MOT insurance not covering my failure, the wrong date on the new MOT, the broken window, the reverse camera the week before and the high fuel costs.

Which part of driving a three tonne car has surprised you the most? The fact that liquid fuel isn't intelligent enough to know that when it is put in your fuel tank it should magically triple its calorific value so you get the same fuel economy as you would in a one tonne car or the fact that the warranty doesn't cover wear and tear? |
