red oil / fluid leaking

Hi folks,

I have a leak somewhere and I am trying to find it. I have noticed red oil / fluid collecting on the subframe below where the engine mates to the gearbox...I could not identify where the fresh leak was coming from as all of the componats above seemed dry??

Does anyone know what fluids in the L322 petrol are red?

Cheers gents MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

The steering fluid appears to be a shade of yellow. I am wondering if it could be the gearbox oil, so might check that tommorrow to see if the level is down MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

Gearbox oil is a honey colour when new then black with age. Could be coolant as its that far back. Take your cap of the reservoir with the engine running (not hot) and look at the telltail jet. Should be either green/blue or red/orange. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

red could be transmission fluid try running the car whilst in park and check cooler lines running from the passenger side of the gearbox running up to the side of the engine if it is the cooler pipes they maybe only leaking under pressure, but if it tastes sweet it could be antifreeze

just checked the coolant and it is red, but it seems too thin to be the be the oily red substance collecting on the afore mentioned subframe under the joing between gearbox and engine MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

the front diff appears to be ok... no sign of leaks. Ill get under it again tommorrow for a good look. i looked at the power steering fuid under the bonnet and it looks more like green that red, so i do not think that it is the cause of the leak.

is there any fluid/ oil in the connection between gearbox bellhousing and engine?

I cannot think where it is coming from, as the crossmember is wet, but all above is dry ?? MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand

When your under there take your camera as well. I had a coolant leak from the top of the engine at the back and it was running down round the bell housing looking like something from the gearbox. As the coolant was hot it had become quite sticky as the residue lost the fluid that makes it up and was more concentrated. Have you felt what the fluid/oil is like to the touch? Does it leave a stain on your drive etc? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

torque converter seal ?? you should be able to check this by looking inside the bell housing via the rubber cap in the bell housing

If you have red fluid coming out of a 5HP24 then someone's put Dexron in it, which means you've got much bigger problems than just a leak.....

What color is your coolant?
What Rob says...
There's several coolant lines on the back of the block, and they do leak and need replaced.
Before a catastrophic blow-out, they will drip under pressure.
The liquid hits the top of the bell housing and runs down around it to drip on the floor, right about where the engine meets the transmission.

Replacement is not hard to do.

Raise the bonnet to the service position (straight up).
Remove the engine cover.
Climb on up in there with a flashlight, or a torch if you prefer, and look at the hoses on the back of the block.
I had a leaking one there, took less than 30 minutes to replace it.
Of course, the parts monkies at the dealership had no idea what I was talking about.
Happily, I showed them the part I needed on their MicroCat, and all was well with the world. Jim

Hi folks , just to update,

I've had a further look at the red fluid and it seems to be coming from the inside of the bellhousing possibly. Is this some kind of shaft seal inside of the bellhousing. I will have to check the rave later to find drawings and correct terminology. Rrphil mentioned about incorrect oil. I will have to get the gearbox oil fill / level plug out to confirm the oil is red. I bought it Feb just gone and it had recently been rebuilt (approx 5k ago now) by a company called sw transmissions somewhere down south I believe . I could not find a number from them to confirm anything, although I have not looked hard.

If it turns out the oil is incorrect is it a case of just draining, flushing , refilling, changing filter of course? I suppose that is all that can be done... Or will it surfice with the "red" oil inside?

I had the engine cover off and the bonnet upright 'tother day to change the rocker cover gaskets both port and starboard, and checked all of the hosesx which appeared to be.nice and soft and relitivley new. Possibly they have been changed in recent history.

Thanks for the input so far folks. And appologies for typos and spelling, as I am on ky phone, which has small buttons! MY2010 TDV8 Vogue Ipanema Sand
