I believe it is the fan that checks the internal temperature on the car (There is the small vent in the dash in that area). Once the systems have shut down (red light goes off by gearstick) it should turn off, if not before, unless it doesn't! .

Had a BMW that did the same... I thought it was a fault, but no, it is supposed to do that. I clean the dust out of the vent every now and again. Could yours be blocked? Could you leave a window open, lock up car, and check if you can hear it 15 or so minutes later? Previously..

Had the same thing on my 2004 TD6, was sure it never shut off, but read the book and it takes 16 minutes after shut down befor it shuts off. and sure enough stop watch in hand spot on 16 minutes it shuts off

as you sit, its down by your right knee.....this flap hides the obd port which sometimes gets left open causing a drain...not saying it is the solution but you have to start somewhere.. ... - .- -.
